We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Sin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I think the most important trait that I have that has been a critical part of my growth in every place I’ve been has been my ability to identify problems. Most designers come into situations with preconceived notions of what the issues they are trying to solve are or are simply too willing to accept that the person they are working with has prescribed the best solution possible. Getting to the root of things and asking pointed questions to help inform decision making has been the best trait I could ever ask to develop.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the most difficult things for me to get over was this constant feeling of ineptitude (aka imposter’s syndrome). Because I was afraid that I simply wasn’t good enough or because I was afraid to fail—I set extremely low expectations of myself and never really figured out how to live up to my potential. Only when I started working with others, creating for myself, and passionately detaching myself from my work did I start to truly see myself in the right lenses. A mixture of humility, confidence, and craft were the antidotes to my lack of self-awareness.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d probably take them out to LA and hit up some of my favourite restaurants. Otherwise, most of the time would be spent in cafes, shopping districts, and possibly public marketplaces. I really just enjoy the company of a genuine person, and with the pandemic having hit us all pretty hard—I don’t think we’d need much to have a good time! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s a bunch of people that I’d want to dedicate my shoutout to, but the following people are at the forefront of my mind right now: My best friends Abe and Steve, an incredible friend and mentor in Ray, and a wonderful support system in Millie, Brian, Dilan, and Tina. Without them helping me navigate my day-to-day and being the voices of reason in big decision-making points in my life, I’d be very lost.
