We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin May Cochanco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin May, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career because of the profound connection I feel between my personal work and my professional path. For me, creativity has always been a way to explore themes of identity, heritage, and emotion, while also allowing me to express ideas that feel deeply personal. I’ve found beauty in how individual we all are as artists—how multiple people can look at the same object but interpret it in completely different ways. It’s that uniqueness, the ability to see the world through others’ eyes, that inspires me. Each artist’s interpretation offers new perspectives, and that exchange of ideas helps shape my own work. I’m fortunate that the Venn diagram of my personal interests and my career overlaps almost entirely, allowing me to live within this creative space both personally and professionally.Ultimately, I pursued a creative career because it allows me to engage with the world in a meaningful way. It’s not just about making things but understanding and contributing to a broader conversation—one that’s driven by individual experiences and shared artistic interpretations.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is deeply rooted in my cultural background and personal experiences, reflecting my journey as a Filipino-born creative. Currently, I’m focused on Risograph printing, a medium I discovered by chance in the fall of 2023. The Risograph is essentially a digital duplicator that uses vibrant, soy-based inks, including fluorescent and metallic colors that can’t be fully captured digitally. I find this practice incredibly rewarding because it feels like an honest way of making art—every print carries a unique texture and character that embodies the unpredictability of the medium.
What sets me apart is how I blend my cultural heritage with contemporary design, often drawing inspiration from personal interests. One project I’m particularly excited about is a zine I created on Voltes V, a popular anime in the Philippines. This project allowed me to explore a rare shared interest with my dad, transforming my understanding of his childhood. I approached the zine with fresh eyes, discovering the anime while making it, which deepened my connection to my father’s past.
While I’m still starting out and don’t have a vast portfolio yet, I’ve been fortunate enough to showcase my work at fairs like Printed Matter. My journey hasn’t been easy; I come from a conservative, business-oriented family, and it took determination to pursue a creative career. However, I overcame challenges by staying true to my vision and leaning on the support of educators and mentors who believed in me.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way include the importance of perseverance and embracing imperfection. Each experience adds to my growth as an artist.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in K-town and am completely in love with my area. If my best friend were visiting, I’d start with what’s close and take them to eateries I’ve found much comfort in. Since the weather is getting cooler, I’d suggest something like BCD Tofu house, where we could enjoy their famous soft tofu soup—it’s the perfect comfort food to kick off the trip. Afterward, we’d explore the vibrant shops in Ktown, from local boutiques to Korean beauty stores, maybe even picking up some unique snacks from Hmart. I’d also love to go to Ahgassi Gopchang for a hearty meal featuring delicious grilled intestines and traditional dishes that are always a hit. To satisfy a sweet tooth, I’d take anyone to Sundae’s Best for dessert, where we could indulge in their delightful Asian-flavored ice creams.
Another thing I appreciate about my area is how easy it is to get to transportation hubs. Close to Penn Station, on another day I’d love to escape the city and head upstate along the Hudson North Line, perhaps to Beacon or Cold Spring. It might be a popular destination, but I find it so refreshing to enjoy nature and take a break from the hustle and bustle. We’d hike, relax by the river, and soak in the serene surroundings.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to both my family and my educators. My parents and family come from a conservative, business-focused background, which initially made it difficult for me to even entertain the idea of pursuing a creative career. But I’m incredibly thankful that they eventually allowed me to forge my own path and have now come around to understand and support my dreams. There’s something special in their shift in mindset—how they’ve tried to see the world through my eyes.
In addition to my family, I owe so much to the educators who believed in me. My high school professors were the first to validate my creative vision, giving me the confidence to pursue it further. In college, I found even more support from professors who not only taught me, but encouraged me to push the boundaries of my work. I’m incredibly grateful to those who didn’t just impart knowledge, but who also encouraged my growth and believed in my potential, even when I doubted myself.
