We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Wexstten and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
I’m deeply committed to remaining authentic and transparent through every step of this journey. This business is personal, from the fact that I created it completely from scratch on my own, to the products themselves. I think it’s critical to remember who you are and why you started and always refer back to that with every decision you make.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After a 10+ career in the fashion industry, I launched Oxalis from my Brooklyn kitchen in June 2015 after nearly a year of research, product testing and a certification in Organic Body Care. While grateful for the opportunity to design for many brands, like the one I left after 6 years at The Gap, I knew my heart was elsewhere. Even as a child, I loved all things body care – visiting the beauty counters at the mall, watching my Mother and Grandmother’s nightly skincare routines, taking a long bath – it was something that I never tired of. The journey has had many ups and downs, and I’ve relied on my intuition the most during crucial decision making. We’re about to celebrate 6 years but we’re really just getting started!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would start with a delicious brunch at Molly’s Rise & Shine, before strolling through the Lower Garden District and hitting up some cool local shops. We’d check out Defend New Orleans, Sunday Shop, The Good Shop, and Merchant House and pop over to Barrel Proof for a drink. Bike riding through the city is a must and it’s a great way to get around. We love to stroll through the French Quarter with an Aperol Spritz or Pimm’s Cup from Napoleon House, and explore all of the beautiful architecture, shops and more. Uptown offers a wealth of cool places to hang, eat and drink – The Chloe and Columns are faves, and if you’re looking for the best po boy, Domilises is by far my fave! The Marigny and Bywater are filled with flair and a plethora of places to eat, like Elysian Bar, Paladar 511, Red’s Chinese and amazing wine bars like Bacchanal and Saint-Germain. The city is never ending fun!! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thanks to my friend Kathleen of Smoke Perfume for the continued friendship and support, and for nominating me!
