We had the good fortune of connecting with Estéban Betancourt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Estéban, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Fear is the one emotion you don’t want to give into when you’re starting a new business. To take risks is to act without fear. Just like anyone out there, I have found myself fearing rejection or failure, but I have never allowed those irrational fears to stop me from pursuing my dreams. I’ve always used those fears as a signal that I am onto something grand, and that I must push on even further. Taking risks has been the most rewarding aspect of not just my career but of my life journey. The universe rewards the bold and courageous, when you follow your passions and you speak your truth the entire cosmos conspires with you to make your dreams a reality. All you have to do is make the leap.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I recently began my career as an interior designer. I did not study this, instead I realize this was my passion through the opportunity I had of building a small boutique guest house in San Miguel de Allende. I was capable of overseeing the entire process of construction and gathered valuable knowledge on architecture and design. I orchestrated all of the interior design and the landscaping, even designed most of the furniture pieces. I am also a writer, I write poetry and even wrote the first draft to my first book. I always try to find new ways of expressing myself through art, from teaching myself taxidermy to taking courses in ceramics in the south of France, there isn’t something Im not interested in learning. It was not easy getting to where I am right now, the hardest part for me has been that my family didn’t really understand that I was an artist and they still don’t get it. Without their support, I suffered a lot of rejection from the people that are meant to truly believe in you. This however has also been what has kept me going and pushing beyond boundaries, I have not allowed a no to deter me from pursuing my dreams. I want the world to know that we are all capable of building the life we crave, there is no reason to live an unfulfilled life, we can all dream and follow those dreams. All we need is faith.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not from LA, but I love the hiking and the antique flea markets. Also enjoy venice beach because it reminds me of Miami Beach where I’m from. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My friends and clients Heidi and Bryan Anderson. Two of the most generous people I know, they’ve helped me when I needed it most not just in a monetary sense but in their belief on my potential as a creative when I myself couldn’t fully see it. They have been encouraging all throughout my process.
