We had the good fortune of connecting with Eunice Sun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eunice, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe the most important factor behind my success is investing myself as an individual into the brand. As a small business, I don’t have multiple people running operations, marketing, and customer service – it’s just me! So, it’s always been really important for me to be transparent with my audience and customers about my business as well as share myself as a mom, friend, wife, artist and entrepreneur with each person I work with. In turn, I actually get the pleasure of getting to know people on a different level that allows us to grow deeper relationships.

It’s been really important for me to be really honest, real and to have fun in my social presence in addition to providing education and encouraging my audience, customers and future customers to be creative, and to try something new. My mission is to show people that they CAN watercolor – even if they’ve never imagined they could.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a watercolor artist that did not go to art school – but spent the last 6 years diving deep into the art of watercolor! In short, watercolors changed my life. I have a background in business development and social media, and years ago I was looking for a creative outlet – always knowing that I was meant to create. When I found watercolors, I finally found a way to express my passion for everyday things including pop culture, nature, life happenings and more. One particular topic that I always was drawn to was botanicals – literally spending days painting house plants and the foliage I snapped photos of on my walks with my dog.

Eventually, I caught the eye of a publisher and I had the incredible opportunity to write a watercolor instructional book called Watercolor Botanicals! What I am most proud of is that I was able to write a book that makes readers feel like we are sitting in a bright lit living room painting and laughing together. To be able to reach readers with my true voice has really been an honor.

Overall, this entire journey has not been easy – it’s been a lot of hard work! I truly enjoy painting custom paintings for my clients – being able to create gifts and capture moments that are so close to their hearts has really been an honor. From creating custom work, signage for weddings, and writing my book – I’ve learned that none of this is easy, but as long as I remain passionate about it, commit time for practice and uphold a high standard for my work, and most importantly that this work makes me happy – then I can make anything work!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my bestie to all the places that make Southern California so amazing! We would definitely check out the beach with some coastal dining at Las Brisas, a little walk down to the Thousand Steps Beach, maybe some seafood at Bear Flag and a cocktail at Tanner’s in Huntington Beach. I would also make sure we went on a massive asian food tour to get Din Tai Fung, Korean BBQ, Taiwanese food, dim sum, and eggrolls at Brodards – at the very least! You can’t come to Southern California without going to Disneyland so – you know ya girl is there for at least a day with her bestie! Then, a show at the Hollywood Bowl would really top off a trip for someone who isn’t local to LA. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people I’d love to recognize that have made a huge impact in my journey. One big one is Melanie Wong and Liz Yim of M.Lovewell – who gave me a chance years ago to teach my first workshops with them and grow as an artist educator in their welcoming, charming and not to mention full of goodies – stationary and gift shop. The impact of a supportive community cannot be of more value to me and many other artists – and they’ve created an incredible space for people to come together to grow and learn from each other. In addition to the physical space, both Mel and Liz as educators themselves have cultivated artists like me and have always been a huge support system for me. I couldn’t be more thankful! Thank you, Mel and Liz!
