We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?

“I have talent, experience and the tools for success.”

In a town of highs, lows, and so many “no’s,” this affirmation serves as my steadfast anchor. Amidst the highs of applause and the lows of rejection, it’s a comforting reminder that my journey is defined by more than just external validation. The right opportunities await, and they will manifest in due time.

This affirmation empowers me to cultivate unwavering confidence in my abilities, to silence the nagging doubts of negative self-talk, and to approach every endeavor with a spirit of kindness and resilience. It reminds me that success is not just about talent and experience, but also about mindset and perseverance.

With this affirmation as my guiding light, I navigate the unpredictable waters of the comedy world with grace, determination, and an unwavering belief in my own potential.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

My career in stand-up comedy has been a journey of self-discovery and perseverance. While I always had a knack for making people laugh. I never felt that a stage suited me.  I was hesitant to be the center of attention, so before comedy I did team sports. Athletics is where I found a foothold for my identity and by happenstance my comedic voice. I remember asking the head soccer coach to go into a game after being benched. I earnestly added the observation that I was “really good”, and he laughed a little too  hard – the only way I could recover was deciding that I “did humor now.” At that moment my new aim was to be funny.

Growing up in the 90’s it felt like confident women were comedically interesting and so I became an overly confident one. My comedy style reflects this confidence, being self-effacing yet high-energy. I enjoy sharing personal anecdotes, exploring identity and life experiences, and sprinkling in some fun facts to keep my audience engaged.

What sets me apart on stage is the energy I bring, fueled by my background in improv and a willingness to incorporate physicality into my jokes. I felt compelled to pursue comedy because I believed my perspective wasn’t being represented, and I wanted to offer a fresh comedic voice that resonated with a diverse audience.

Transitioning from performing in my hometown on the east coast to relocating to a larger market was a pivotal decision in my career. It required immense commitment and the willingness to embrace instability, but ultimately, it allowed me to grow as a comedian. I’ve had the opportunity to learn, create, and connect with other talented comedians, reinforcing my belief in myself and my chosen path.

Despite the challenges, I’m proud to have built a sustainable career in comedy, continually reaching new audiences as I travel across the country to perform. Looking back, I realize that those who encouraged me to pursue stand-up were onto something, and I only wish I had taken the leap sooner. Through it all, I’ve learned the importance of betting on myself and following my dreams with unwavering determination.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A perfect Sunday activity is grabbing a snack and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the Culver City Farmers Market. Get a poem from Peyton Fleming to add a unique and memorable touch to the experience. During the week my favorite coffee spot Coffee Connection offers a cozy and inviting environment to relax and catch up over an excellent cup of coffee. Known for its delicious wings, Ye Rustic Inn, in Los Feliz, is a must-visit for anyone craving some tasty pub fare. It’s a casual spot with a laid-back atmosphere, perfect for enjoying good food and conversation. Up the road the happy hour at Figaro Bistro in Los Feliz is a fantastic way to unwind after a long day. With its charming French-inspired ambiance and delicious drinks, it’s an ideal spot for socializing and enjoying some tasty bites. As a comedy fan, catching a show at either The Crow or the Elysian Theater is a highlight of the itinerary. Both venues offer fantastic programming and a chance to enjoy live comedy performances in a fun and lively atmosphere.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family deserves immense credit for being a solid support system. From running jokes by them to seeking their guidance and lending an ear, their unwavering support has undoubtedly been a driving force behind my success. The community of women in the scene, both in Los Angeles and across the country, deserves recognition. Their camaraderie and encouragement have likely been instrumental in shaping my journey. Alchemy Comedy Theater in Greenville, SC, where I got my start, deserves a special mention. It provided me with a space to learn, grow, and hone comedic skills, ultimately paving the way for my career in comedy. It’s places like Alchemy that serve as the foundation for aspiring comedians to flourish. Special recognition goes to Erin and Jenny, the hosts of the Rom Com Show. They produce a show full of talented comics in LA every 3rd Thursday of the month at the Ripped Bodice bookstore in Culver City. The generosity with their stage, time and encouraging words undoubtedly make a significant impact on the comedy community.
