Meet Evan James White | Author & Podcaster

We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan James White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evan James, why did you pursue a creative career?
Work is how we spend most of our days, at least that’s what it seems like in our society. If that’s the case, I want to spend most of my days doing what I love, doing what energizes me, doing what has the potential to inspire others.
I want to do work that is most aligned with who I am as a person. I see myself as creative and believe that I’m at my best when I am creating.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art excites me because it is not only a tool for my self-improvement but a way to connect with others who may be feeling something similar to me. It’s a direct reflection of what I’m experiencing in the world, serving as a mirror of sorts and allowing others to maybe see some of themselves as well.
More specifically, my art right now focuses on my experience in the world as a trans man. I’ve written an affirmation book “Hey, Man! We’ve Got This!” as a way to relate to and inspire my trans brothers at a time when our rights, livelihoods and lives are under increasing threat. I also have a podcast, “Just Another Guy (Who Happens to Be Trans)” that shares and inspects some of my thoughts and feelings about my experience.
I’m still developing professionally, but I got here by believing that what I had to say is important and necessary. That belief in itself is fuel for me. It isn’t always easy because right now it doesn’t completely pay the bills. I do delivery and shopping gigs for income as well and will often use whatever downtime I have during those shifts to write or come up with new concepts to discuss on my podcast. I’m learning that my art and my everyday life aren’t really all that separate because the content of my art is woven into every moment and interaction. My everyday living is a way for me to put my art into practice and to discover more to expound upon in future writings and discussions.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There’s a great brunch spot I like called Gritz N Wafflez, we’d probably hit that up a few times during the week. There’s also a coffee shop set up on the weekends at Love632 Studio we’d stop by on our way to one of my sisters’, aunties’ or friends’ homes in Inglewood or Hawthorne. Family and friends are important to me so anyone coming to town to visit me would have to put up with all of us lol.
If it’s the summertime when I have visitors, we’d go to a pool party hosted by B4 The Internet or CutiesLA at The Line Hotel. I went to a couple of those last summer, and they didn’t disappoint.
We’d have to also check out Venice Beach but during the week when it’s a bit less crowded. We’d probably spend the whole day there and still not get to everything the boardwalk has to offer!
There’s a new LA poetry slam team called Culture, we’d definitely see if they had a slam going on in the city and spend the evening listening to poetry.
As for dinners, we would probably go to Koreatown and walk into any random noodle bar we pass. My friends and I tend to like those sorts of unplanned experiences and I’ve yet to have bad ramen in LA!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends. They have supported me in various ways through the many changes and transitions that I’ve experienced so far. I believe they’ll be there to support me as I continue to grow.
