We had the good fortune of connecting with Fabian Renteria and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fabian, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Yes I do! I had a professor that said; “Pattern Making separates the Men from the boys”, on the first day of my first Pattern Making class in Design School. I thought it was silly at first but after graduating and working in the Fashion Industry I can say nothing has ever rang truer. Pattern Making is such a crucial part of the design process. If you do not have even the most basic knowledge of patterns and fit, you are going to struggle in this industry.

I consider myself a proficient pattern maker and have dealt with many instances where the “designer” I was drafting patterns for knew very little about this subject and it just goes to show how people in this industry are SO quick to call themselves designers without knowing the craft.

I have a passion for this craft and everything that goes into what we do as designers and believe the real learning begins when you make mistakes and have first hand experiences during fittings. Seeing how the fit problems translates onto paper.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I draw inspiration from science fiction, futurism and fantasy. I have always been fascinated by the idea of designing for what the future looks like in my own mind. Although, my idea of the future is more like something out of a Tron movie; bright neon lights and plays on shapes and lines.

The road to where I currently am has not been easy by any means. I still have lots of ground to cover and am still building my brand. BUT I can say it takes lots of sacrifice, patience, and countless sleepless nights. You don’t ever get over the challenges because as an independent artist/designer there is always something to overcome. You just have to keep working hard and trust the process.

The biggest lessons I have learned is everything happens for a reason and you cannot lose what is not yours.

I am just a small town boy with BIG dreams. I love creating art/fashion and I want to share my experiences with other like minded individuals. I want to show that you can make your dreams come true with hard work. I want to show the world you can make something of yourself and it doesn’t matter the color of your skin, or where you come from. We only have the future to look on to.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting for a week I would take them on an early morning trip for coffee at a small coffee shop here in LA called Holy Grounds. They have great coffee and showcase local artists inside of their cafe. They also have a small patio area with tables, umbrellas and fountains. Then after I would take them to Enerst E. Debs Park for nice hike. The trails are full of amazing views of the city.

Since there are so many great food spots in LA I would take her to a different place every day/night. There is a local mexican food restaurant down the street from my house that serves the best tacos. Ramen is definitely a staple in LA and Ramen Tatsunoya in Pasadena is one of the places I would take them too! For food and drinks we would definitely be going to Yard House at LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles. Not to mention all of the roof top bars here as well!

There would definitely be Beach Days. My favorite beach here is Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro for the fact that it is more secluded than most other beaches in the LA area. It’s also my favorite area to catch a sunset.

These would be just a few of the countless things there are to do here in LA.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to Nick Verreos, David Paul and Nancy Riegelman. I am so beyond thankful for their mentorship from my design school years to present day. They saw my potential and always push me to be great at what I do. Being one of Nancy’s students was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I will cherish forever.
