We had the good fortune of connecting with Farmer Dave Scher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Farmer Dave, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Creativity is like Nature… it abhors a vacuum. “Let there be light”! , the stars seemed to shout.. .and the FDWOW were born.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I currently lead a band named “Farmer Dave & the Wizards of the West” (FDWOW for short). We are a cosmic West Coast soul group featuring six singers, two drummers, an electronic drummer / percussionist, two guitarists, a bassist and myself on keys, lap steel guitar, and melodica. We have a full, lush sound and are very excited for the world to be opening up again so we can play concerts! Being musicians during the pandemic has been difficult, but our family-style sense of togetherness, sense of humor, and perseverance led to a great new batch of songs. Having COVID, myself, taught me what’s important in life, and I cherish my friends, family, colleagues and opportunities to grow and express creativity NOW!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Farmer’s Market (3rd and Fairfax) … a timeless classic! Love the Gumbo Pot and the hot sauce store there…
Big Deans… a classic beach burger at the Santa Monica Pier
Elysian Park… one of the best views of downtown LA anywhere
La Brea Tarpits / LACMA… the perfect blend of art and tangible timeless history bubbling right up through the ground!
Griffith Observatory / The Greek Theater …. beautiful vistas with a feeling of classic + modern history.. even if there isn’t a concert
Surfrider Beach, Malibu… for surfing, it’s the style capitol of the world, a great place to visit all year round
Ojai / Santa Barbara …. the day trip to end all day trips, beautiful time travel!
Watts Towers, Watts, CA…. one of the wonders of the world and a great cultural reminder…
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my friend and colleague Lenore French of the Mar Vista Music and Art Walk on LA’s West Side. Lenore is a tireless proponent of social justice + supporter of the arts and culture…. and her work with the Art Walk has brought creatives, civic leaders, business owners and many organizations and charities together for fun, inspiring, awareness-spreading events for several years, now. A great model for communities everywhere… thank you, Lenore!
