We had the good fortune of connecting with Flor Crosta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Flor, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Uruguay, I grew up in Montevideo, the capital city but was living in Punta del Este, a small town by the ocean, before moving to United States. Growing up in such a small country as Uruguay, surrounded with family and friends, let me to my interest in other cultures. How people relate to each other, their daily lives, aspirations and photography seemed the medium to explore all this questions.

Throughout my life I explored different professions or hobbys, from one year of medicine school to finish my degree in social communication, working in fashion, interior design and hospitality. I kept changing jobs but photography was the only thing that stayed there. Finally I decided to dig into it and now it has been 5 years since Im freelancing as a photographer and making work for myself.

Every experience that I had, made me who I am today, moving places, meeting different people, traveling every time I could impacted on me and my photography. My interests are constantly changing but now I’m able to canalize it through my lens.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The artistic and creative process is not an easy one but its totally worth it. As cliche as it sounds, I’ve learned to enjoy the ride, trying not to think too much about the future. Be at a good place with who I am and what I do. And then, opportunities will come. Make work, find the time for it and look inspiration in others, go to museums, see what artists are doing, read books, go for walks, meet people. I am where I want to be? Not yet, but I will keep going. Would I ever be? No one knows, but doesn’t mean we should stop trying it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Photography used to be a practice more for myself, kind of lonely until I went to ICP (International Center of Photography) to study. I met incredible people and became part of a unique community. Nowadays Im member of Small Table Collective, a collective of 11 photographers from different parts of the world where we support and create together.

Also I would like to thank all the people I’ve crossed paths with, everyone made me who I am today and where I am. Special mention to Sabrina Srur, who encouraged me on making my first solo show, Darin Mickey for your guidance and sharing knowledge and all my family and friends that inspire me everyday.
