We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabrielle Mirabella and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabrielle, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want my work to be remembered only if it made someone laugh. If it wasn’t funny, really just forget about it. As a person, I want to be remembered as a bridge for other artists to reach their next gig, or collaboration, or the idea for their next show. After leaving behind the competition of New York City, I had a chance to focus on what I want as an artist. I want nothing more than to create what I want to create, and to afford that same opportunity to other artists. Life is too short for competition and selling yourself short. Make what you want now and help your friends reach their full potential.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The theater has been a part of my life since the 7th grade when as a giant 12-year-old, I was not cast in my school’s production of “Joseph and the Amazing Dreamcoat” because I was a foot taller than the rest of the kids ensemble. Undeterred, I began auditioning professionally and was soon acting for a paycheck. I haven’t stopped since. In my late twenties, after 10 years of National Tours and Regional theatre, I decided to head back to grad school to fulfill my amateur passion for writing musicals. NYU Tisch accepted me into their MFA Musical Theatre writing program, and I haven’t stopped since.

What I’m most proud of as an artist is my ability to do exactly what I want to do. Let me also say to any younger artists reading this, that this is not the best financial, mental or spiritual advice to take, but I’m a highly stubborn person. So I created my own version of a career, and somehow, I’m really happy with where I am.

I still have many larger goals that I know I will reach eventually, but I know that rushing too fast will only hold me back. The pandemic taught me to let things fall into place as they come. If I keep writing, if I keep creating, things will happen.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes towards Wolfbane Productions, a non-profit arts organization and professional theatre company located in rural Centra Virginia. This theatre has afforded me so much in the past 7 years of our collaboration. I’ve worked at this theater as an actor, originating a role in a musical written by Hollywood screenwriter, Cinco Paul, as well as many other immersive productions, and currently, in my position as Development Director, connecting the non-profit to other arts groups, creating arts education opportunities for local students, and fundraising. But the biggest gift this inclusive and creative space has given me, was the ability to premiere my first full-length musical, “Camp Crystal Lake, a disgusting parody musical.” As a safe space for LGBTQ+ people in a majority conservative region, Wolfbane continually creates opportunities not only for artists like myself but for anyone that wants to experience the arts.
