We had the good fortune of connecting with Gail Albright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gail, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
My biggest goal as a professional artist is simply to have a body of work I am truly proud of. In the future, I want to be able to look back and know that I did my best, did some cool stuff, and most of all, had fun doing it. I hope that no matter what scale or esteem of project I work on, I am able to reflect fondly without regret. Besides that, I also plan to one day settle down and become a teacher. A couple of years ago I worked as a teachers assistant in my college’s summer program. I found a great amount of fulfillment working with the next generation – and discovered that teaching others is another passion of mine. Once I have gained lots of industry experience, I hope to return to a teaching role.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a strong focus in 3D sculpting and modeling and am drawn to animals and fantasy as my subject matters. I work in a variety of styles, but when it comes to my personal brand I like to incorporate fun shapes, curves, and cartoony look. One of the biggest challenges I’ve had to overcome if pivoting from a 2D to 3D artist. It can take a lot more effort to get things to look how you want in 3D that are easier to do in 2D. Right now most of my sculpts are in greyscale, but I want to continue to push myself in my texturing and rendering abilities to bring vibrancy back into my work. 3D has a steep learning curve that definitely was difficult to get though sometimes. There were many times I felt like giving up, but each time I tried I got better, and now I am obsessed with 3D. I never want to stop learning and I want to keep pushing my work to the next level.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am currently living in the DFW area working remotely. As a native Texan, I love to bring outsiders to all of our yeehaw cowboy activities. I’d bring them to go to try on cowboy hats and Cavender’s, get some good TexMex at Anamia’s, and look at the longhorn cows at the Fort Worth Stockyards. A personal favorite of mine is the Old West themed murder mystery diner in Grapevine, TX. Texas has it’s fair share of problems, but I’ll always have room in my heart for the cowboy vibe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I really want to shout out all of my instructors up to this point- its been so valuable to look up to older artists who love the same things I do, and I’ve learned so much from them. To name a few: Mr. Tiede- thank you for being one of the first commercial artists I met and taught me there is more to an art career than charcoal still lives. Mrs.Wolfe- thank you for encouraging my passion for animation all the way from when I was a wee high school sophomore. My instructors from Ringling College of Art and Design; Jeremy, Heather, Justin, Stewart, Snyder, Matt, thank you all for giving me passion for being a 3D artist and teaching me so much along the way. There are too many to list, but I am truly thankful for every teacher I’ve worked with.
