We had the good fortune of connecting with George Mathews and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi George, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The single most important decision I made that contributed to my success was the decision to not ever give up. There were so many times over the years when things got really tough and I wanted to quit, but hanging in there was the best decision I could’ve made.
What should our readers know about your business?
I own Smash Coast Music, a boutique Production Music company that specializes in bespoke music for use in all areas of media. We’re not a Library, we’re a small collective of extremely talented and dedicated music creatives from around the globe. We’ve landed our music in major film, advertising, games and network/cable television. We even create custom music for corporate training vides, public spaces, etc. Although our specialty is bespoke Urban music, our team can create all styles and genes. From Hybrid-Orchestral for film trailers to most current Hip-Hop, Smash Coast can cover it and deliver fast!
Smash Coast is extremely unique not only because of our incredible team of creatives that can cover all genres and styles of music, but also because we as a company make it a practice to keep an open line of communication with our creatives. Each Artist, Producer and Composer on our team has open access to any of our executives, including myself. Our personal, hands on approach creates great working relationships, which allows us to procure a quality and quantity of music that is unmatched by many much larger companies, especially in the Urban genres.
I’m very proud of how far the company has come over the years and the fact that we’ve been able to survive a prosper within a constantly evolving and very competitive industry.
Starting and running this company has been the most difficult thing I think I’ve ever done. I faced a lot of challenges along the way and felt that each one was something that I had to meet head on. I brought on a partner a few years ago named Kim Williams and she’s been integral in our recent growth and success. One of the things I learned over the years is that you can’t do everything yourself and expect to succeed, and bringing Kim on was one of the best decisions ever. I feel we’re a force to be reckoned with.
As a creative myself, I understand the needs and issues other creatives face in today’s climate.
Our philosophy at Smash Coast Music is to always be a champion for the creative. We spend a great deal of time educating and making sure creatives have a clear and concise understanding of both the Music and the Sync Licensing industries. Our mission is to provide a viable synchronization based alternative to traditional recording labels.
Smash Coast is about creativity, individuality and excellence. We strive to provide a level of quality and client service that is unsurpassed in the music industry. We are edgy with a bit of attitude and always ready to press play!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d have to show them some of the tourist sites like…
Walk of Fame
Venice Beach/Santa Monica Pier/3rd Street Promenade
Peterson Automotive Museum
Aquarium of the Pacific
Kuru Kuru Sushi/Burbank
The Stinking Rose/L.A.-Hollywood
& Waffles/Toluca Lake
Uncle Andres BBQ/Studio City
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly, I have to give credit to my Sisters, Charlie and Gloria. Like a lot of people, I had a pretty rough childhood. My Sisters always looked out for me and made sure I was OK, even when it was hard for them to do so. They’ve both been a great influence on my life and without them I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today.
