Meet Gerardo | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gerardo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gerardo, how do you think about risk?
I see risk as necessary. Whether in business or any form of art, you have to put yourself out there. For many reasons we all get insecure about putting ourselves out there, but it’s necessary for success. Opening yourself up to criticism is part of the journey. I think when it’s all said and done, most people will regret what they didn’t do versus what they did do. Regret is often a heavier burden than failure, failure is growth, failure is experience, failure is risk, but ultimately failure is an opportunity to try and do it better.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a multi-media artist based out of Los Angeles. Lately my works consists of acrylic & mixed media on canvas & wood. My subject matter has now blended the many phases I’ve gone through in the past, where I focused more on the human emotions behind my works vs decorative imagery. My latest works have gotten a chance to touch on the environment & mental health. My goal is for the viewer to look beyond the literal image & explore the piece and its many meanings, symbols & passions. What sets me apart is that my art is purposeful, thoughtful & emotive. Art itself is never easy, at least not for me. Sometimes you get ideas right away and the execution doesn’t come out how you imagined it would, and other times ideas can take years and you going through certain experiences for the ideas to develop. Oftentimes a lot of things need to happen in order for a piece of art to come to fruition, whether its a book, film, painting, etc. What I love about art is that you can pick it up when the inspiration strikes but you can also re-visit a piece later when you have a clearer path. Some lessons I’ve learned along the way is to keep creating, you’ll never know which piece will resonate with people. It is often said Art is the receipt of pain, so don’t waste those emotions whether an art piece, a love song etc, take advantage of your emotions and your journey to produce something impactful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite things are Dodger games, with great food, drinks & the most diverse fanbase. A hidden gem to checkout is always The Huntington Library, whether you love art or nature, at the Huntington you get the best of both worlds & has always been one of my favorite places to visit. For food LA has so much to offer, El Compadre in Hollywood always hits & usually has a trio playing live, Yamashiro is always a vibe as well & El poblano which has multiple locations throughout the city also offers authentic TJ style tacos. Any of those spots you can’t go wrong.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The biggest shoutout I can give is to my parents Ismael & Lidia who’ve always supported me throughout my career. Secondly my siblings, family and friends who have often felt like family. I’ve been blessed with a great support group surrounded by many caring individuals and many great artist as well. The love throughout the years has definitely been felt, THANK YOU ALL.
