We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Webb and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I spent 10+ years in advertising and partnerships before starting aila, and was also a CPT in New York. Aila began out of a need I saw not only with myself, but with my fellow active peers for better-for-you active nutrition products. I’d tested out a ton of pre-workout supplements to fuel my fitness routine, and none of them lived up to my nutrition standards with the high amounts of caffeine and artificial ingredients. Not to mention, as someone that cares about what brands stand for, I felt the products were really just marketing to athletes and bodybuilders, not me – the twenty-something girl going to Barry’s Bootcamp and SoulCycle in NYC. 🙂

The thought process was to bring more whole-food, sustainable ingredients to a pre-workout format, so that active people like myself could feel good about what they were drinking before their workout, without the risk of long term use.

My greater mission for the brand is to empower more active lifestyles, by combining natural with convenience. I’d had countless unmotivated mornings to get to the gym, where aila was just the boost I needed to get me there and get going. Life is about the in-between moments, and I’d like to think if our products help you get from point A to point B in a more natural, sustainable way, then we’re doing our job.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m really excited about the brand we’re becoming in the active nutrition space as we’re a complete departure from what’s been done in the past. There are constant challenges, but our consistency is what’s gotten us where we are today. Some of my best lessons have been teaching myself to focus on only a few different things at a time, vs. trying to be everywhere at once. As an e-commerce business, it’s easy to get distracted by the shiny objects – those being new marketing channels or platforms. Also, to celebrate every small win. When things feel tough (which is daily), I try to flip my inner dialogue and think about how grateful I am to be getting to build something of my own, that’s the reason I get out of bed everyday.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh that’s a tough one! I live in NYC – so there’s a longgg list. I like trying new restaurants, so maybe one of my favorites in Chelsea. Would probably take a fitness class too (duh) – I love Barry’s and SLT. A walk by Hudson River Park, the little speak-easy by me called Raines Law Room, and probably Soho.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Not sure I could pick just one! I’m lucky to have gotten to know lots of founders in my community and am able to turn to them for for advice, support, and encouragement when I need it. Also, my fiancé, who was the first one to see the wheels turning in my brain on aila, and has cheered me on from day one.
