We had the good fortune of connecting with Giancarlo Burgos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Giancarlo, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
When I began my career as a hair artist, I didn’t realize how much of an impact I could have on my community? Creating has been a source of healing for myself and for those around me. When I sit down and reflect on what my business has done for my community and the world, I think about what a simple act of service can do for a person. Doing community service events for the less fortunate or lending an ear to my clients like a therapist at times in a world with so many ups and downs, providing a safe space for people to come and embrace change can be so helpful to our mental health.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe it’s important to see the things you create as an artistic medium. Whether it’s hair, clothing, or paint on canvas it’s an expression of oneself. I am excited to blur the lines between hair, art, and fashion although they play such a big role collectively, they are not all seen the same. Altr The Ppl is born from an ideology that they all can coexist and thrive together and that one is not more influential than the other.
Getting to this point an artist was not easy and for those that are creatives can relate when I say this life isn’t for everyone. Overcoming challenges as a creative requires grit and determination. Leaning into my passion and working on my craft as much as I could to tone out the negative voices helped me focus on what was really important. Altr the ppl will be the first image development brand to blend multiple industries and bring positive change to the interpretation of “art “.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
After being in Los Angeles for a couple years now iv really come to appreciate small businesses. The food, the energy , the love that these places provide is an experience in itself.
For me it’s all about the moments and experiences that we have that really make us cherish life and for me that’s definitely food and art. Typically would start off with recommending one of my favorite coffee spots in LA, Bohemian House of Espresso + Chia Which is know for their dirty chai and avocado toast, a must try. Hard to really narrow down my favorite food spots because LA has become a melting pot for new restaurants , but some of favorites are Sonora town , bestia , kazu nori and cava for a quick bite.
For a great drink and vibe I recommend Las perlas they specialize in mezcal tequila. Tuesday they have live music and some really good tacos in the patio. There are also a wide selection of museums and art walks to feed your artistic needs.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to the big man upstairs, my family and my mentors that constantly push me to be a better version of myself. I am blessed to have found my purpose and passion at such a young age. I knew I always wanted to give back to others, inspire, and break boundaries. From a very young age my parents instilled the idea that could accomplish anything I put my mind to and work hard for it. My mentors molded my thought process, guided me, and let me make the mistakes I need to make in order to grow. None of those things would even be possible if wasn’t for God giving me the direction and gift of creation. My goal now is to give it back to others.
