We had the good fortune of connecting with Gisselle Borress and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gisselle, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

Brevn is my passion project. It was purely created as a way to express the one aspect of my life I was always missing, creativity and focus. Brevn became the vehicle for my creative escape with endless possibilities to continually create and repeat. I wasn’t looking for a “job” as I have that taking care of my family and running our household. I never expected that jewelry design would become a “career” but I am enjoying every moment of my days when I am making something beautiful, knowing that will pass along other people wearing Brevn Designs. Eight years ago, I moved to a town where people are creating. Malibu is filled with hat and bathing suit designers, writers, photographers, healers, artists, etc. For me, being surrounded by creative people and powerful elements like the ocean and mountains, was the perfect place to get inspired and motivated. Jewelry was an easy choice for me. I have always enjoyed jewelry and have been drawn to crystals and gemstones. I can spend hours sourcing the newest stones and making it become special. Jewelry  is such a popular accessory and I work hard at making and finding unique pieces with meaning. I want my designs to feel special, therefore I only use real gold and naturally sourced stones.  Every Brevn piece is handmade and designed with the intention that they become a keepsake, bringing the powerful elements of the necklaces to everyone who wears them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

My art is designing, creating, shopping for the right pieces, finding gold at the right price without compromising, marketing and developing relationships. I was in marketing for 15 years and I quickly adapted again after being out of the work force for 12 years. Taking weekly trips to the Los Angeles Jewelry Mart was invigorating. I definitely make some ——— along the way with ordering supplies and I even sometimes repeat them, but I don’t focus on them. I focus on the gemstones I use, their meaning, and what they symbolize and how to manifest your desires. I have Zincite at my table because it manifests creative energy. I surround myself with Amethyst because it helps assimilate new ideas. This is what I put into every piece of jewelry. I find when you love what you create, they will come.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

It’s really hard to leave Malibu, so my first stop would be pizza from our wood burning pizza oven at our home overlooking the ocean. I would go on numerous hikes off kanan and the PCH. Hiking Puerco canyon is pretty scenic and it takes your breathe away when reaching the peak above the ocean. Moving into town I would start by biking or rollerskating by the Santa Monica Pier down to the Little Fatty. I love the easiness of heading downtown easily and going to Smorgasbord. Hitting The Broad Museum and the Grand Central Market is always fun cultural moment. Being vegan, I would hit Monty’s Good Burger for sure.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My husband, Joseph Borress, who encouraged me to take this leap believing in my talent. It was a random day when I told him I was going to start selling my jewelry and he didn’t skip a beat and offered me his ideas and business smarts. My sister-in-law, Amy Glass who can somehow answer any business question I may have, as well as having a creative sense of her own. Finally, Molly Marler, the best photographer I know. We help each other in so many ways… thank you. Friends, this would not happen without all their posting. Social media is a powerful media I am just  learning about how it works . It’s brought me back to life!
