We had the good fortune of connecting with Giuliana Bernini and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Giuliana, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When me and my brother decided to start our business we wanted to bring to the USA the best quality coffee, with the most exotic flavor profiles in order to show people in the US a little bit of what the Pura Vida Lifestyle from Costa Rica can be like. We grew up in a coffee producing family, so for us coffee was always something we were passionate about. With Stefano’s experience in the agriculture industry and Giuliana’s food science background, we believed we could create something really interesting featuring tropical flavors, healthy food and the highest quality coffee in town.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our business slogan is “Coffee with Care” because it truly is what we care about. We not only care about WHERE your food and coffee comes from, but we care about YOU, the experience you have when you drink coffee and how it impacts your daily lifestyle. Our coffee stands out by itself because of the quality, the awards and because it is 100% traceable. Our care for you when you are part of our community is like you become part of our family, we hang out, we are always available to teach you more knowledge about coffee and YOU are our priority. Finally, we care about our planet. We donate 1% of all of our sales to the Rainforest, we care about doing good to our planet and maintaining it. I am the most proud of the community we have created, creating a team that cares about your business as much as you do hasn’t been easy! Most of our customers are also return customers which is a confirmation that we are different and they love it!
Starting this business was definitely not easy, it was probably the hardest thing I have ever decided to do. I think the best way we have learned to overcome our challenges has been by taking it one step at a time, and knowing that everything is going to be ok at the end of the day. Learning to trust yourself in this process is so important and it has definitely been a game changer for me.
Some of the lessons that I have learned along the way are that quality is definitely more important than quantity, and that great things take time. I tend to want everything right away. For example, I just opened a new shop and wanted it to be packed right away, and guess what?! That takes time! And that is ok! And developing the community we want in a new spot is definitely a challenge worth taking because when you look back and you have an amazing community and a product you are proud of then it makes it all worth it.
I want the world to know that when they come to Berni Bean or order our Beans they are choosing quality, and prioritizing their health. And as a plus, they are also helping our mission to preserve our beautiful planet!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to check out live music, places that have local artists and a lot of character! I would for sure bring here to Deep Ellum, which is the street with a bunch of art and restaurants/bars.
Then I would take her to the comedy club and of course to Berni bean for brunch the next day 🙂
We would also go on a walk at White rock Lake after brunch and maybe a little kayaking.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have always been my role models, I have seen them both work hard for everything we have my entire life. My dad has been an entrepreneur for as long as I have been around and he has always done it with love and passion and inspired me to believe I could do it. Having a family business has been such a beautiful experience because you have the best support by your side. As for a book that has inspired me in many ways, and when I feel things are hard I remember it is The Ride of a Lifetime by Bob Iger, I have always been a fan of Disney and his personal experience as a CEO of such a big and amazing company was inspiring and very educational as well.
