We had the good fortune of connecting with Glennellen Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Glennellen, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is everything. My career, my successes, would not operate without risk. If I had ever played it safe, I would likely still be living in my little beach hometown, participating in local theatre now and then with a decent job that paid well. Is that a shameful outcome? Of course not. But it would be doing myself + my gifts the greatest disservice. In that reality, the creative in me would be drowning in my thoughts of what could have been…if I had only taken a risk. We can plan, structure and proceed with caution all day long. But at the end of that day, we must take risks. I’ve found that society has associated the word “RISK” with the word “RECKLESS.” It’s why many people I have met fear taking a majority of risks. Financial risks, career risks, lifestyle risks… All of which can be acted on with a level-headed approach. To risk, means to go after something without relying on guarantee. It means to believe in yourself, regardless of the potential outcomes. We all take risks every single day, even without realizing. We risk our lives on the road, we risk our health with every dietary decision and every step we take. We cannot live without risk.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve found that my art expresses who I am, both on + beneath the surface. On the surface, I am a redheaded extrovert + performer who is an open book and wears her heart on her sleeve. Beneath the surface, there is an old soul who cherishes her solitude and only tells the world her story through her music and lyrical diary. What visually sets me apart as an artist, is also what sets me apart overall: my red hair. My independent label is called BETTER OFF RED. It is also the name of my movement + fanbase, Better Off Red Nation. The meaning behind it is simple. I am better off as myself, and only ever as myself. My brand is very authentically me at all times, because no matter what new avenues I continue to explore throughout my career pursuit, I never stray from who I am at my very core. My brand, while always growing, is cohesive and consistent. No matter where my career takes me, I want the world to see this shine through all that I do. Also, my audience is predominantly female, with a heavy lean on the 14+ demographic. I remember how crucial it was as a young woman to be able to learn from, look up to and follow the lead of other strong women – in business, in entertainment and just in general. I want to be that for my generation, and for the generation following me. The road to my current success was absolutely not easy. But there wasn’t a single thing I would change – even the difficult lessons learned along the way. Every milestone, big or small, I worked for and earned. Nothing was ever handed to me, and anyone who ever thought or suggested otherwise is sorely mistaken. I overcome all challenges with an open mind, the desire to learn and unwavering perseverance. There is nothing that has knocked me down and made me question whether or not my passion for the arts – for music, for stage, and for film and television – was for me. Our gifts are not to be questioned. They are to be treasured, acted on and never taken for granted. As for what I’m most excited about? The present. Because without excitement in the present, I can’t be excited for what the future has in store. So, join me on this wild ride. It’s only up from here.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve found my favorite gems since moving to Los Angeles four years ago. Some places a little obvious, others very unpredictable. Pre-COVID, your week-long visit with me would go something like this: Bubble tea from Alfred Tea Room, or TeaPop. On Sunday morning, we would walk around the Melrose Place Farmer’s Market, where we’d stuff our faces with samples and order avocado toast from my friend Jamila’s stand (@avocadotoastca). Next, I’d take you to Glossier to sample all off their incredible skincare and makeup products. During the week, we would explore the Getty Museum all day long. Love me some mystery and history. For a beach day, we’d sit in front of Gladstones in Malibu so that we could walk right up and grab a Pina Colada. We would definitely explore Koreatown, and experience the neon glow tunnel. For brunch, we’d go to Ladurée in Beverly Hills or Joan’s on Third. For drinks and laughter, we’d pray that Fortune Feimster was performing somewhere during your visit. Because my gosh, that is the best night out. For a night in, we would order Sugarfish and invite some friends over for the best conversations. There is a gorgeous night hike I know of, where you are so close to the sky you can almost touch it… But I’ll never tell you where that is. You just have to trust me, and let me take you there. You would definitely get to live a day in the life with me, too. You’d wake up with me to see me put 3-4 changes of clothes in my car, then go with me to grab coffee at Alfred as we headed off to the auditions, callbacks or fittings lined up for the day. Might even have you read a self tape audition with me. And of course, Disneyland. You’re not leaving till I’ve gotten to be a complete kid with you at Disneyland.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Jerry + Katrina, my parents: for making me your wildest dream and for encouraging my every endeavor. Paden, my brother: for often being my behind-the-scenes confidant, my soulmate of a best friend and worlds cooler so that I can forever stay in-the-know with what’s hip. All I’m gonna say is “REDDIT.” Tracey + Tom, Anne (aka “Prez”) and Matt: for being the #1 family of supporters. My BETTER OFF RED NATION team + management: MK Connors, Chase Kneely, Tanya Kleckner, Elle Potruch, Taylor Krause, Javo Barrera. My bandmates: Austin, Rob, Lucio, Benny, for performing with me from the very start since moving to the west coast. Javo, Matt, Anthony, and Julia, for joining the crew. My Creator, My God, the man upstairs: the fact that You so endlessly love me, push me, answer me, and work for me, every day with zero exception, renders me speechless. Because I am a royal pain, and I know it. Special thanks to dear friends, who contributed in so many beautiful ways along the way: Andy + Polly Andrews, Judi + Luis Castro, Cooper Andrews, Alyson Croft, Owen Smith, Lenise Ligon + the team at FOX 10, Cephia and Desi, ATAIA, AceGoes Productions, Daniel Lamb, and Grace Auten.
