Meet Go Scarlet | All-Female Rock Band

We had the good fortune of connecting with Go Scarlet and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Go, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
We aren’t going to give up because we are only just getting started! There is no excuse for not pursuing your passion and we are here to standby that and encourage everyone out there, especially those who can find any reason under the Sunshine, to NOT do something! Here us out: Go Scarlet’s current lineup came together in the Winter of 2022. We all have full time careers, extra curriculars, adult responsibilities, etc. 3/4 of us are moms! We have minimal “free time” and we’ve all decided to pursue this project at later times in our lives. Heather Moonflower, our vocalist/guitarist has dealt with low self-esteem and lack of confidence since adolescence, but recently realized that there is now better time than now. Always passionate about the performing arts, she was actually a Theatre student in college, but her immense stage fright and anxiety kept her from pursuing it any further. Our bassist Arlina grew up with music. Her dad was a prominent figure in the San Diego music scene for many years. Drummer Christina Leigh also grew up with music and can play multiple instruments. She only recently started playing and becoming prolific on the drums about five years ago. Tamara Monasterio on keys only recently began learning to play piano, within the last six years. The girls had had previous, but minimal music-playing experience within a band setting. It’s definitely a challenge to find time to get together with four full schedules. But to write and compose music, as four women is just on another level! 🙂

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We are an all-female rock band based out of North County, San Diego (we make sure to be geographically specific). We have been together for less than one year and we are in the midst of writing and recording our first album! This is a GIANT feat that none of us have ever done before! What sets us apart, aside from being women, and the fact that we practice inside of a shipping container (you know, those long and skinny metal containers), is that we are all age 30 and above with full time jobs and other grown-up obligations. There are a few handfuls of all girl bands between LA and San Diego, but we stand a little outside of the lines for these aforementioned reasons. Heather and Tamara had been playing music together for over a year and had decided that the time was right to begin working on original music. Heather was going through a (pretty regular) mentally trying time and her therapist had suggested she put words to paper. She had recently written an album’s worth of songs and Tamara had recently written her first ever song! They began posting ads every which way, and in the end, Craigslist (yes, it’s still existing), is how we were brought together with our current lineup! We want everyone to know that it is never too late to find and pursue your passion! Whatever that may be. To work out, to find a better job, to go down a different path…it’s like making a New Year’s Resolution, but actually doing it! If you really want it, you will find time for it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So much has changed the last few years. Heather used to live on the Westside and Venice Beach has always been near and dear her heart. Many nights spent on the Sunset Strip, and afternoon drives up PCH. A lot has changed with conglomerate corporations and housing projects taking over. Heather says: “I’d take my friend to the Magic Castle for dinner and a show. We’d spend time in Hollywood, pretending life is in black and white like the old pictures. Walk around and do touristy things for a while and then end the night at a Burlesque show.” Tamara says: “I’d take my friends to all the well-known places in LA and some hidden gems too. We’d start the day with a stop at Canter’s Deli followed by a quick tour at LACMA and then browse the aisles at Amoeba Music in Hollywood. Next, we’d drive up to Griffith Observatory to see one of the best views of the city. From there, we’d catch a show at the Troubadour. Maybe someday it’ll be our show! The following day we’d definitely check out the Getty Museum for some inspiration. and head down to Santa Monica Pier to people watch and grab lunch at Urth Cafe.” Arlina loves Goth Clubs, so she’d most likely take her bestie to Das Bunker or Bar Sinister.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to our families for being the VIPs! They support us in following our rock n roll fantasy! We’d also like to acknowledge Kayla Egan, (she’s kind of like our very own personal) photographer. Like us, she is up and coming and extraordinarily talented! All of our neighbours get a good word because they put up with our loud after-dinner, sometimes weeknight band practices. Thank you to everyone who has come to watch our band perform, our social media followers, those who have invited us out to play. Lastly, a big thank you to Mr. CP for recording our tracks!
