We had the good fortune of connecting with Grace Garza and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Grace, what do you attribute your success to?
To keep going, no matter what. My journey has not been an easy one. Even though I’ve had ups, downs, and detours, I kept my eye on the prize. I kept my vision clear and kept trying no matter what. With each hardship and triumph there is a lesson in each. To understand why that worked or why that didn’t work and bring it with you for the next step. To never stop pushing yourself and if you get knocked down, get up again. Most importantly, when you feel like crying just laugh. Positive energy will take you where you need to be.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Through the years I have worked for several firms and designers. I learned a lot from those experiences. But always in the back of my mind, I couldn’t wait to be the boss. I knew that I did need those experiences though to grow. I always call them a paid education. I then had some curve balls, one of which was having children so, I did put my dreams on the back burner. Being there for my daughters was very important to me. Once I got the second one to the age of almost starting school, I knew it was time to start again. This time though, I would be the boss. That’s when I started Grace Garza Design. It was strictly word of mouth and still to this day it is. My first job was a kitchen, a big bite to take just getting back to it, but I did it. It was intense and scary. It was my new baby! From there they told someone, and on and on. I love working with strictly referrals. They feel comfortable because they’ve seen my work and I feel comfortable because they’ve seen my work. Plus, there is a more relaxed relationship between us. Interior design is a marriage. You work together for several months, sometimes longer. It’s important to like one another and most importantly trust one another. I value every job. It’s literally my calling card to the next job. Each job to me is like my baby. Like my first kitchen. I’m a nervous wreck until they see the finished project. I truly care about the experience and the end results for the client. I want it to be something they love and I feel proud of at the end. For me it’s never about the money, it’s the joy my client expresses that means the world to me. My job is to help create a beautiful space, but more importantly it’s to make my client feel happy and safe in their space.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Before when people would visit it was always the normal spots… Venice beach Or Hollywood. Now, I love taking people to places in my area.
Lunch at Rib Ranch in Woodland Hills. For the best ribs and tri tip. Then a drive through Topanga Canyon stopping at Lookout point and some of the shops. Down to PCH for a drive along the coast to Malibu Zuma beach. After enjoying the fresh air and water, definitely head to Malibu seafood to eat fresh shrimp and calm chowder while watching the sunset. Back to Agoura Hills to Whizin center which has great boutiques and restaurants. To eat my favorite vegan peanut butter gelato at Tifa chocolate and gelato. Nature and food is life!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is dedicated to my husband, David. We started life together at 20 years old and he has always encouraged me in my dreams. He is my rock and my biggest fan! Without him, I don’t think I’d be where I am today.
