We had the good fortune of connecting with Grace Muwawa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Grace, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite quote or affirmation is actually a scripture found in Jeremiah 29: 11 which states “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. My faith keeps me sane and this scripture always gives me the encouragement and the push that I need every time I am feeling down about life. What I love about it is the fact that it’s a confirmation that I can’t fail, for the plans set for me are plans of prosperity and advancement.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a young entrepreneur and philanthropist who has relied on hard work and faith to get her through some incredible challenges. Through those challenges, I discovered my passion for fashion and love for helping young orphans. In 2009, with the help of my birth mother, we opened up an orphanage called “Fondation Heberande Global Inc ” in the Democratic Republic of Congo {DRC}.
I was born in the DRC and journeyed to the USA at a very young age, I faced many trials that birthed my desire to help children from my country.

As years went by I decided to use fashion as a means to help my orphanage, henceforth in 2017, my brand House of Muwawa came to life. I was Designing, styling, and concept-creating for photo/ video shoots. I also found myself diving into event planning and hosting where a percentage of the proceeds were donated to my foundation.

What sets me apart from others is that I found my purpose at a young age and I’ve been driven by purpose ever since. I am most proud of my growth and my constant resilience, my ability to bounce back shocks me at times.

I got to where I am today by one believing in myself, believing with every part of me that I am skilled & able to reach every goal that I set for myself. regardless of what things may look like, always remain consistent and have a great work ethic. I had to remind myself that nothing great comes easy, but to never fold yet stay focused.

I credit my success to God, he has carried me through a lot of adversities, and through him, I was able to overcome a lot of challenges both personally and professionally.

When i started my brand I had no idea what I was doing or getting myself into, it was through trial and error ( a lot of errors ) that I was able to gain the knowledge and experience. Some of the many lessons I’ve learned on the way are that words are powerful, to always speak life into myself and my business, to Take time researching and creating a solid foundation for my business, and lastly to always have a contract.

What I want the world to know about My brand is that House of Muwawa is more than just a fashion brand but rather a lifestyle; a lifestyle that embraces challenges, that empowers, liberates, and welcomes expressions. on the other hand, I am more than what I’ve been through, my story is a testament to what was meant for evil God uses for Good. I am very excited for what the future hold for House of Muwawa and myself

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am new to Califonia, but I do look forward to first exploring the FIDM Museum, The fashion district, experiencing Fashion Week, and spending a day In Napa Valley on a train tour.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been blessed to have amazing people in my corner cheering for me. I would like to give a major shout-out to first my godmothers, Sharilyn Belinfante, Sharon Di-Muro, and Aunt Barbara James. They have been my rock before the birth of House of Muwawa. They’ve always believed in me, prayed for me, and spoke life into my goals and dreams with no hesitation, their support and encouragement mean the world to me. Secondly, I would like to acknowledge my business mentor/Manager Monica Graham, there are no words to describe the amazing role she has played in molding and directing myself and my brand; I will forever treasure her counsel. Lastly, my loving and supportive friends Ngolo Kitenge, Tylar Brumfield, Stephanie Lindsay, and Destiny Jones for every merchandise sold; they purchased, and for every event/ fundraiser I organized they assisted and attended. I am forever grateful for our sisterhood and for experiencing life together.
