We had the good fortune of connecting with Greer Wylder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Greer, how does your business help the community of world?
I am hoping that my business is helping the community by shining a spotlight on what local businesses are offering.
We’d love to hear about a book that’s had an impact on you.
There are so many books that have made an impact on me, but as far as business goes it would have to be Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuk. It’s a wealth of information for anyone doing social media marketing. He gives great advice on connecting with an audience and telling a story. I highly recommend it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been covering Orange County lifestyle for the past 30 years for the Los Angeles Times Community News, magazines, and with my own online publication and newsletter, Greer’s OC that covers fashion, dining, events, and trends. Now, I am writing a book called Born in OC to feature people who are making a difference and adding to the betterment of Orange County.
Most likely it will come out in 2021. As far as challenges go, I’ve had many, but who doesn’t? I feel very lucky, and thankful that I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many interesting people and now to share their stories.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s easy: I live in Costa Mesa and since we are so close to the beach, I would take them down to the peninsula to see the Wedge. It would be fun to take them on the Balboa Ferry to Balboa Island since that is so unique to this area.
One of my favorite hotels in the area is the Surf & Sand Hotel in Laguna Beach. It’s literally right on the beach. There are so many great restaurants in the area, so breakfast or lunch, I would take them to Haute Cakes Caffe in Newport Beach, Vitaly at the CAMP, Toast Bakery & Kitchen in Costa Mesa, or Lido Bottle Works at Lido Marina Village. For dinner, I would take them to The A Restaurant in Newport Beach, Fable & Spirit in Newport Beach, CDM in Corona del Mar, Vaca in Costa Mesa, Trenta, and Il Dolce in Costa Mesa.
It’s best to stay outdoors now so I would take them on a hike at Crystal Cove, or the Back Bay. Being outside in nature is always best.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My friends and my son are my biggest support system and I wouldn’t be able to do all that I do without them. With that said, I have one friend in particular that I consider my mentor who has helped me tremendously in launching my second business. Niyaz Pirani of Knife & Spork Public Relations is one of the brightest and talented people I know. He’s one of the best in the PR world when it comes to storytelling, video marketing, PR, and photography. He’s always learning and growing. He’s always encouraging and is a great person to bounce ideas off of. I am so lucky to know him.
