We had the good fortune of connecting with Greg Mollin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Greg, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think that the success of Artifact Books brand has a lot to do with my love for what I do. It might sound quaint, but I believe that people really see and feel my enthusiasm for reading, collecting, and selling books. I spend a lot of time and energy with the curation of the inventory, whether it be new releases or the rare collectible books that I offer. I also really try to spend the time to talk to my customers and get to know them before I recommend something. I’m not just sitting behind the desk with my nose in a book, I’m attempting to connect with people and find them something that they’ll love. One of my greatest joys is putting a favorite book in a customer’s hand and having them come back later to tell me how much they enjoyed it. Since independent bookstores are becoming somewhat of a rarity, I think it’s very important for it to be a personalized experience and something that impacts the customer more than just pulling a book from the shelf of a big store.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Artifact Books is an independent bookstore in Encinitas, CA. Not just simply a new and used bookstore, Artifact sells a curated collection of new, used, rare, and collectible books. We offer everything from used, beach-read paperbacks, to poetry collections from the 17th century. We carry a wide selection of new release titles weekly and special order books for lots of great customers looking to support their local bookstore. Artifact Books also hosts author events, book signings, and themed events and sales. I’ve been lucky enough to make friends with many authors that I’ve looked up to and read for years, and many of them are kind enough to send out signed bookplates and special promotional materials to go with their new releases if they’re unable to make it out in person.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Firstly, I’d like to thank my parents for having such a great, eclectic library in our home for me to choose from. Books were always prominent in our home, and nothing was off-limits. If I could physically read it, it was fair game. Unfortunately, they’ve both passed on, but I think they’d be proud of what I do for a living. I’d also like to thank my wife, Jennifer. She believed in my vision for what I could do with the store and has been supportive from day one. And of course, I’d like to thank the locals, customers, and authors that welcomed me here and continue to make bookselling such a pleasure.
