We had the good fortune of connecting with Grow Sista Kelcie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Grow Sista, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always loved to bake and cook since I was young. Once I got old enough, I became interested in cannabis! I loved the way it looked, smelled, and tasted! My friend Jordan (Backwood Pat) who passed away in a car accident in 2015, introduce me to edibles in 2011 and I really enjoyed them! I had a terrible experience with them in College 2013, lol I will just leave it at that, and never really thought about them until 2017. I had just lost my boyfriend at the time Vinshay, who always told me chase my dreams and do what I love. I was struggling between jobs, temp agencies, unemployment, and a major loss. I kept putting off my dreams of opening my own business, to find ways to get a steady check & back on track. In 2019, I finally landed an amazing job with a non-profit. However, COVID-19 came 5 months later and I was let go. I finally had the time, money, motivation to take a risk on myself! I thought to myself, “What do I love, and how can it generate me long term income.” I wanted to bake/cook, I knew cannabis was a huge market at the moment & I have always wanted a munchie truck! I was talking with a friend one day and came up with the name Grow Sista & ever since I have created a variety of amazingly delicious treats, candies, drinks and a skin care line called Grow Care.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe what sets me apart is my passion, everything being homemade, my personality, truly loving what I do. I always get compliments on how my treats are not strong in taste, but strong in affect! Clients get the best sleep, pain is relieved, and a delicious treat. I receive amazing compliments on my customer service, how amazing my treats taste & make them feel! I got here by taking a risk on myself. I always knew I did not want to work to build someone else dream or company, no matter the career path I choose. It was easy to take the risk, but there were many challenges, finding clientele, proper dosage, Does it taste good? Will they actually work? What will support be like? Can I make it financially? Surprisingly and thankfully, there was an outpour of support in my community! I’ve learned its hard work to be your own boss, build a brand, have a social life, get enough rest, and juggle life in general. I learned better money management, support comes in all forms, and not everyone will see your vision or understand it. However, it’s been the most rewarding, fun, I get to meet amazing people, and most of all I get to help many people!
I would want people to know that Grow Sista turned a passion and a cannabis plant into products that can heal and also be enjoyed. I’m learning to grow in many aspects of life and Grow Sista is all about GROWTH! I have faced many obstacles, as many have, and if Grow Sista has taught me anything, it’s to GROW. Learn from the mistakes, the jobs, the friends, the experts; to expand your mind and GROW.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in the Bay Area, Northern California, So I would take them to San Francisco, Oakland, and Napa. First day I would head to San Francisco to do tourist activities, check out beautiful views, grab some food on pier 39, check out the beaches, and find a nice lounge to go to! Second day, we would go on a hike in the Bay, then to Oakland for a nice Bottomless Mimosa Brunch, walk around Lake Merritt where the local Vendors are. Later that night bar hop and check out the real Bay Area Culture! Then end the weekend with a nice trip to the Wine Country, Napa. Set up a nice wine tour at a couple Wineries, and a nice relaxing dinner before they get ready to head out! These are some of my favorite places to visit and have a great time in the Bay Area.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There would be groups of people I would love to shoutout! I would love to shout out my parents & family, individuals who donated supplies when I was first getting started, friends who reposted, supported, assisted with events, and most of all clients who have supported continuously. Without you all Grow Sista would not be Growing!! Thank you all so much for making Grow Sista a reality.
I would love to dedicate my drive, motivation, and creativity even to Vinshay J. Bracy, who always supported, encouraged and motivated me in every aspect of life RIP.
