We had the good fortune of connecting with Guilhem Fourty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Guilhem, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose an artistic career without asking me too many questions. The drums was an evident choice and so I decided that this will be my own way of expression. I just loved the way it brings people together by playing rhythms as a universal language. You can do so much with it! Following this path was for me a way of embracing what I love, and pursuing my dreams as a creative.
Recently, I have been focusing too much on the difficulties and obstacles of being an artist, a musician, so I want to remind myself and others on how rewarding it is to create art, to have the freedom of expression, and to spend all days doing something you’re really passionate about.
I am very grateful for what I’m doing and having the chance to pursue that path.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I’m a drummer, composer, producer, and educator from France currently based in Boston.
I would say that I’m the most proud of my path, coming from a small town in the south of France in a family of scientists, and now being surrounded by huge artistic inspirations of mine that I have the honor to work with. About to graduate from Berklee master’s program, I’m very excited about being done with school so that I can explore life and develop my own projects.
I always strive for creating my own opportunities, and collaborating with artists that are more knowledgeable than me, so that I can learn something from it. I think this is what made me grow as an artist and become the musician I am today.
In the last few years, I’ve worked with various artists such as Danilo Perez, Braxton Cook, Miguel Zenón, Mayu Calumbi, Ian Coury, Audrey Bussanich, Zach Santos, Kieran Brown, Pedro Couto Silva, Rakel Saranga, performing in many venues and festivals around the world. More recently I collaborated with xPropelr on the project “Dreaming Freedom” which includes musicians such as Alex Isley, Justin Kaulfin, Kris Bowers, among many other talented musicians. I am very excited about the release of that music and to share it with you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Back home, there are a lot of great things to visit! The city of Toulouse is very beautiful and has a lot of activities.
Some of the iconnic places I’d recommend to visit are the Jardin Japonais Pierre Baudis, le jardin des plantes, le musé des augustins, la cité de l’espace, the museum de toulouse, les abbatoirs, le musé des beaux Arts, Marché de Victor Hugo, and le Quai des savoir…
Two of my favorite restaurants to go are “Les Sales Gosses”, and “Aux Pieds sous la Table”.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A person that means a lot to me, that help me reach greater musical heights, someone that supported me in the toughest times, and a great friend, is my mentor Neal Smith. I had the chance to study with him at Berklee for couple semesters, and we’re still very close. All of the lessons I had with him were life changing, and I can’t recommend enough to check out his work. Fantastic drummer, incredible teacher and human being.
