We had the good fortune of connecting with Gulsum Keskinoglu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gulsum, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
As an artist, I am constantly fascinated by the intersection of my Turkish heritage and the vibrant energy of New York City. Through my work, I explore themes of gender, societal constraints, and the beauty of the female form.
Drawing inspiration from diverse influences, my sculptures, ceramics, and paintings aim to captivate audiences and provoke thought-provoking conversations. I believe that art has the power to transcend boundaries, challenge norms, and evoke emotional responses.
Having exhibited my work globally, I am proud to serve as a mentor for emerging artists, sharing my knowledge and experiences with the next generation. I am committed to fostering creativity and artistic growth in others, as I believe in the power of collaboration and community.
Establishing my own studio/gallery in Williamsburg was a significant milestone, allowing me to showcase my work and solidify my presence in the contemporary art world. I am dedicated to pushing the boundaries of my creativity and continuing to explore new artistic paths.
Overall, my goal as an artist is to create pieces that not only engage the viewer aesthetically, but also challenge their perspectives and ignite conversations about important societal issues. Through my art, I strive to leave a lasting impact and inspire others to see the world through a different lens.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is a reflection of my personal experiences, cultural heritage, and exploration of social themes. What sets me apart from others is my ability to merge my Turkish upbringing with the vibrant dynamics of New York City life. This unique perspective allows me to create thought-provoking pieces that transcend boundaries and bridge different cultures.
I am most proud of the impact my art has had in sparking meaningful discussions and resonating with viewers worldwide. From sculptures and ceramics rooted in my Turkish heritage to intricately detailed paintings addressing societal constraints on women, my work carries a powerful narrative. I am excited about the conversations and dialogue my art generates, pushing existing norms and evoking empathy and understanding.
My journey to where I am today professionally has not been an easy one. Establishing myself as an emerging artist in a new country presented its challenges. However, I have overcome these obstacles through perseverance and determination. The support and guidance from mentors like Tevfik Turen Karagozoglu in Turkey and the inclusive environment created by Lee at Dacia Gallery have played a crucial role in my growth as an artist.
Along the way, as an artist and small business owner I have learned valuable lessons. Staying true to myself and my artistic vision has been instrumental in my success. I have also learned the value of community and collaboration, as well as the power of art to provoke thought, inspire change, and foster dialogue.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that it embodies creativity, cultural exploration, and a dedication to artistic excellence. My art seeks to challenge existing norms, break down barriers, and make a positive impact. With the opening of my own studio/gallery in Williamsburg, I am furthering my commitment to creating meaningful art and providing a platform for other artists.
In summary, my art showcases a unique perspective that sets me apart from others. I am proud of the impact my work has had and excited about the conversations it generates. My journey to where I am today has been filled with challenges, but I have overcome them through perseverance and support. My brand and story embody creativity, cultural exploration, and a commitment to making a positive impact through art.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would recommend exploring Times Square to experience its vibrant atmosphere. Additionally, visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island would provide a historic and scenic experience. For art lovers, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art are must-visit museums. Taking a day trip to Brooklyn and exploring neighborhoods like Williamsburg and DUMBO can offer a unique experience. Indulging in the diverse culinary scene of Queens, especially in neighborhoods like Astoria and Jackson Heights, is highly recommended. If you’re looking for a trendy and hip atmosphere, Williamsburg in Brooklyn is the place to be. Central Park is a beautiful and tranquil spot that shouldn’t be missed. Don’t forget to catch a Broadway show for incredible performances. For stunning views of the city skyline, rooftop bars are a great option. Lastly, catching a live music performance at renowned venues like Brooklyn Steel or the Brooklyn Bowl would be a memorable experience.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to Lee, the owner of Dacia Gallery. Lee has had a tremendous impact on my life and my career as an artist in New York.
From the moment I walked into Dacia Gallery, I felt a sense of belonging and support. Lee not only provided a space for artists to exhibit their work, but also created a community of like-minded individuals who encouraged and inspired each other.
Under Lee’s guidance, mentorship and help, I have grown as an artist, pushing the boundaries of my creativity and exploring new artistic paths. His knowledge, expertise, and unwavering belief in my potential have been instrumental in my artistic development.
Beyond the gallery, Lee has shown genuine care and interest in the personal and professional growth of every artist he encounters. He has organized workshops, artist talks, and networking events that have allowed us to connect with industry professionals and expand our artistic horizons.
I am truly grateful to Lee and Dacia Gallery for providing a platform for artists like me to showcase our work, grow as individuals, and contribute to the vibrant art scene in New York City. Their support and recognition have made a significant impact on my journey, and I am honored to have them in my story.
Additionally, as an emerging artist on a visa, with limited proficiency in the English language, the support and guidance provided by Lee and Dacia Gallery have been especially crucial. Despite the language barrier, Lee’s patience and understanding have been instrumental in helping me overcome communication challenges and fully embrace the artistic opportunities in my new country.
Being an artist with limited English skills adds another layer of complexity to navigating the art world. However, Lee’s inclusive approach has made me feel welcome and supported, regardless of my language abilities. He goes above and beyond to ensure that I have the necessary resources and assistance to effectively showcase my artwork and connect with the art community.
I am immensely grateful for Lee’s efforts in creating an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and breaks down language barriers. Through his guidance and the support of Dacia Gallery, I have been able to gain confidence in expressing my artistic vision and collaborating with other artists from around the world.
In acknowledging Lee and Dacia Gallery, I also want to express my gratitude to other individuals and communities who have provided support as I navigate the art world with limited English proficiency. Their encouragement and understanding have been invaluable, reaffirming the importance of art as a universal language that transcends linguistic barriers. I am grateful to him forever. Thanks to him and his family:)
