We had the good fortune of connecting with Haolan Zhou and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Haolan, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am originally from the south of China and came to the United States in 2017 for the BA program. I grew up in a small town where I started exploring nature at the age of seven because we have a harmonious folk environment. I caught crickets and dragonflies in the fields, I stayed under an osmanthus tree for two hours to keep the smell on my body, I climbed a mountain top just to take a sip of fresh spring water. Literature is another important part of my journey, as I stayed in the public library whenever I could. I saw the world outside the city, outside my country, and even a fantasy world. Growing up with the freedom and support of my family, I was fortunate to learn drawing, calligraphy, Chinese dance, and singing before college. In such a colorful environment, my curiosity about this world grew day by day. I have never felt lonely because I am always grateful for what I have, and all I wish is to see and remember as much as I can in my life.

Growing up as a child who always had many interests, such as painting, knitting and handicrafts, I also kept an open mind when I first got introduced to photography. I learned about all types of photography, from analog to scanography, which I complemented with my previous art practice. The most exciting thing about my profession is that I am always exploring something new and using different materials and processes. And that’s also what sets me apart from other photographers: I never know what surprise I will create for myself in my next project.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Growing up, my mother was always my biggest support and inspiration. She was always very supportive when I wanted to take various hobby classes from time to time, even though I often got bored and gave up halfway through. She never forced me to excel in my studies, but she also introduced me to her good habit of reading books. She loves fashion and sparked in me an interest in styling, which eventually led me to my current interest in fashion photography.
