We had the good fortune of connecting with Harpreet Kaur and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Harpreet, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was pretty self serving, I think.
There were a myriad of reasons to do it.
I had control over the curatorial direction, I did not have to ask the artist to give me a disproportional amount of money if their work sold. I could also be among my other responsibilities. This meant I could try to build a small gallery with little overheads and still be involved with the best part of the ‘industry’, the artist Themselves. It is a very ad-hoc space so it really gives me room to experiment since it is just a window.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work and joy is in focus. Whatever media I use, focus is the main driver, the real creator. Yes, there are themes that come up when I am creating but essentially you will be struck by memories of time.

I create like a way of life. A lot of my work is rolled up into scrolls and hidden away in nooks and crannies like texts from ancient monks in a mountainous cave . The challenge for any honest creative is courage. That is the work – the work of working.

The concept of the @a(g)allery is A 🪟,
Art living in a living space.
“Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time, Jean-Michel Basquiat once famously said.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are Authors that have allowed me to recognise myself in this world . Isabel Wilkerson’s book Caste , Nikole Hannah-Jones’s 1619 Project , Mark Kurlansky’s Salt and even Dr Harris’s My Soul Looks Back are just a few that really allowed me to understand the journey of my lineage through the ages and my very own.
The thread of post colonialism wraps itself around the world tightly in disinformation.

Locally, Jose Sanchez III , a fellow artist I met when I first moved to Los Angeles County. I have to shout out the Infinite School and the Feminist Center for Creative Work Organisation. Very fortunate to know product designers Alejandro Ohlmaier, Photographer Salima Allen and Niki Ford .
