We had the good fortune of connecting with Hilary Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hilary, what inspires you?
I am inspired by the resilience, courage, and passion of other people. I find myself continually motivated to share interesting stories that I hear through movement, music, and dance. Through connecting with others regularly (which has unique and obvious challenges these days), I am energized. Through making art, I am energized. I am so lucky to be surrounded by a community of artists who are eager to collaborate and connect just as much as I am!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started Lineage in 1999 as a way to support nonprofit causes in the area. There are so many wonderful organizations doing really important work, yet I didn’t have any money to donate. I decided to get creative with my contributions and create performances honoring these charities. Through personal storytelling, music, and dance, I was able to share the mission of each nonprofit in a unique and meaningful way. Over the years, Lineage has grown into a nonprofit organization of its own, dedicated to connection through the arts. In 2010 we opened our own theatre space in Pasadena and have continued our work, raising awareness for all kinds of causes through live theatre and dance. There certainly have been challenges along the way, especially now when we are doing all of our programming virtually. However, with the support and dedication of so many people in the Lineage family, we continue to connect and thrive despite so many unprecedented obstacles.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That’s a tough one to answer these days. I’d definitely suggest we pack a picnic, a towel, a bathing suit, and head straight to the beach. I’ve found that over the past eight or so months, the ocean has been my personal haven. We can be safe, socially distant, and yet immersed in a beauty that so many people don’t get access to on a regular basis.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Throughout the 21 years that Lineage has been in existence, we have steadily developed a magnificent and powerful army of dancers, musicians, actors, writers, artists, audience members, volunteers, board members, class participants, workshop participants, nonprofit partners, and community members. Each person has contributed to the success of Lineage in very unique ways. I am eternally grateful.
