Meet Humza Syed | Fashion Influencer/Wardrobe Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Humza Syed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Humza, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Choosing to become a creative was hardly a decision that was only for myself. Growing up I’ve always had an admiration for fashion, but never really saw anything for it until I got to the senior year of high school. It was the one thing that always put a smile on my face so I went for it. I started to experiment with style and my way of thinking began to change. Coming from a Pakistani household, that did bring a lot of tension though because usually we’re raised with this mindset that we should become a doctor, engineer, or lawyer. I didn’t really have any support from anyone nor was I ever allowed to express myself. The more I dived into the creative scene, the more I realized that this isn’t just for me, but for all the South East Asians (and anyone else that can relate) that struggle to be themselves because of family, culture, hate, etc. I want to show them that you can do whatever you want and should never let anyone limit you because I really do think one thing that all humans are allowed is expression.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I wouldn’t really be where I was if it wasn’t for my friends, the people I’ve met along the way, God, and myself. I’m grateful for all of it.
Being in the industry now for a few years, what sets me apart from others is my style and energy. I love love experimenting with all clothes. I don’t think fashion has a gender so my style is very unisex. One day I’ll wear a small skirt and tights and another day I’ll wear a bomber jacket with some boots. I know many people dress as seeing clothes with no gender but I really do believe the way I do it is another level.
I’ve always been huge on getting out of my comfort zone. I don’t like staying in it for too long because nothing good comes from being comfortable. So I like to put that energy also into my styling. I like to try testing my clients and see if they’re willing to let me style them a little bit out of their comfort zone. It helps them test something new but also maybe find a new style they didn’t think they’d be into.
I think I like to get uncomfortable because growing up my parents would try to keep me grounded. I was never able to be myself and dress how I want or talk how I want. It wasn’t until I moved out that I cool finally be Me. I just want to give that energy to others at the end of the day. Inspiring people to be true to themselves and not let anything get in the way.
You know how people say that everyone is born on this planet for a reason?
I really do believe that’s my reason.
To help others that are struggling.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hm this is a little difficult because I usually stay at home. I think I definitely would take them to Six Flags because rollercoasters?? Yes. A hiking spot I love is Eaton Canyon because it has this waterfall at the end which is so pretty. Mchullond Drive for views, Everett Park to just chill and it also has a nice view of downtown.
Food wise, I’m huge on Thai and KBBQ so I’d take them to Ocha and any all you can kbbq out here.
I would also like to introduce them to my friends because it’s always the best time so that’s a must.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One person that definitely deserves a shoutout is my old sophomore English teacher Steve Schultz. He taught me what it means to love yourself and others. That you can’t give love to other people if you don’t love yourself first. I live my life everyday with a positive mindset and trying to be kind to others as best as I can and it’s really because of him that I’m like that. Steve was so heavy on the idea of filling other peoples buckets and looking at life from a “glass is half full” perspective. Even though it’s been 9 years, his teachings and words have stayed with me.
