Meet Huy Vuong | Dancer & Dance Instructor & Choreographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Huy Vuong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Huy, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Hi, my name is Huy Vuong also known as “Ah Moonz” among the dance scene. I’m a street dancer specialized in Waacking. I was born & raised in Vietnam, and I’ve moved to the USA since 2018. When I was six years old, I already had a big interest in dancing by watching Western Pop music videos and even some old school Korean Pop music videos. Apparently, my family found out that I like dancing so they took me to my first choreography dance class in 2003. During my first 5 years of dancing, I had been performing with many Vietnamese pop stars at the time and I just really enjoyed to be on stage. Until 2008, the movie “Step Up 2” was released, that movie has completely changed my dance career from a studio kid to become a competitive street dancers. Ever since then, I’ve started training in various styles of Street Dance also competing, judging and performing in different international contests
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As I’ve already said, I didn’t have any supporting and encouragement from the others because of I was doing at the time. When I started learning about Waacking in my first 3 years ( 2010 – 2013), there wasn’t many tutorial on the internet, so I had to learn the dance through some performances from Japan that I found on youtube. Luckily, I was grown up at the time that social media was blowing up, and I tried to connect with anyone who has information about the dance even the smallest clues. Thanks to the circumstances, I’ve gained more experiences which the younger generation will never get it. Throughout all the hardship that I’ve been through, I think the biggest lesson that I’ve learned is “Never Give Up And Keep Being Hungry For Knowledge”.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To be honest, I don’t hang out often haha. But If I had to take my best friend to the my favorite spot, I would take them to the dance studio and practice together haha.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well honestly, I didn’t have any support from the surrounding when I grew up. The only reason was because the dance style that I decided to start with called Waacking – a dance style came from LA gay club in the 70s, which was a very new style for everyone in Vietnam at the time when people were not very open-minded about LGBTQ+ and there were still lots of toxic masculinity among the street dance community.
