We had the good fortune of connecting with Ilya Mokhov and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ilya, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that life rewards those that are not afraid to take risks. I risked it all when I started my career as a painting artist. I just graduated 2nd in my class at Sacramento State University, with a major in International business(business administration). All I thought about was painting, all of my free time was spent creating art, and learning new methods of expression. At that time I was living in Sacramento where my family was against my decision to follow art fully, but I kept going because I believe that life was meant to be lived with passion and joy. Art brought me those feelings. Then I made a huge decision, to move to Southern California(LA/Hollywood) and to follow my passion of art, with no place to live but my car, and no real plan. My parents were not big fans of this idea, or lack of one. I packed everything into my Honda Civic and drove down to Santa Monica, where I spent the next week or so living on the beach, letting nature inspire my art career. Fast forward 3 years later, I am here living in Laguna Beach, working daily, with over three hundred paintings sold, murals I completed in Orange County, illustrated a children’s book, painted hundreds of commissioned paintings of pets and people. I feel like I am still in the beginning stages of my art career, for a lifetime is barely enough time to know what art is. I am excited for the future even in these difficult times, I am again going to risk it all and go big on my art, double down and create a beautiful life of art!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I paint with a palette knife, I use an impasto style when I create art. My desire is for people to feel an emotion when they see my art, and for it to inspire others to be their best self, and to express themselves freely. There were many challenges that took places in my art career, and with Covid-19 there are still challenges to face, but I am proactive in my ambitions and my journey. I know that the only person that can change my life is me, and I must be strong and move forward. Learn, evolve, adapt, become better. I believe that we can achieve anything we set our minds to. I work hard daily to be bring my dreams into reality. I want the world to know about me: You can achieve anything you want, when you work hard, discipline yourself, find joy in your work, and help others. Life is meant to be lived with passion and joy!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my friends to the beach. I would take them surfing, diving and exploring the underwater beauty of this world. I would take them to Santa Monica, Laguna Beach, and beyond.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to the people on the frontline of the Covid-19. Nurses, doctors, and medical professionals. I love them, and my art is for them. Thank you for saving lives, I will do my best to do my part of creating beautiful art for people to enjoy to help people get through this difficult current time, and for our future, lets rebuild this world with love and kindness.
