Meet Inbal Kaizer Assa: Artist & curator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Inbal Kaizer Assa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Inbal, has your work-life balance changed over time?
I definitely see nowdays how this relationship can be so amorphous.
For me, the big change came along five months ago when I become a mom,
As a career focused individual, with the excitement of being pregnant came also fear losing myself and all the hard work I have done. I was scared to lose the gaining momentum I had following a successful exhibition I took part in. All of my works were sold out and the phone kept ringing when I found out I have a baby inside me, and that was a little scary.
While being pregnant, I kept being productive, even over productive. Every “easy” month was covering for “the next month” that I imagined to be harder. I was scared I wouldn’t be able to paint, move and carry things. But this month actually never came and I found myself packing paintings that are so much larger than me even a week before labor.
My studio was fuller than ever. I actually finished a painting a few hours before my water broke and I knew all along while painting it, my baby knows and waiting for that right time.
It is unnecessary to mention that the last five month lacked of sleep and time but I’m happy to say that I found out that my son is a source of pure love, the largest force to my ambition. Motherhood made me better, it reinforced me and made me more accurate about what I want to make and say.
I’m actually working these days on a secret and very different project I literally dreamed on making for so long!
So yes, I don’t mix colors at 2:00 am anymore and I don’t work for ten non-stop hours nowadays, maybe it will come back. I try to be as efficient with my time as possible and I realize I can do more.
Today, trusting the continuous transition and the organic behavior of life-work balance, a perfect (balanced!) day would be one that I have made a progress in my studio and also took the time to stroll in the sun with my son.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is about seeing our everyday life in a different perspective.
On my current collection I create minimalistic paintings using people patterns from an aerial point of view.
I paint the city as my Petri dish.
I guess this whole vision came to my mind from the feeling I’m a part of it but yet I’m always watching as I see everything from a window. I joke about it, saying Im a rooftop anthropologist.
My soon to be, new collection will be all about being a crazy scientist watching nature and I can’t explain now but I hope you’ll stay tuned!
What are you most proud of ?
Remembering how hard it was for me to put myself out there when I started years ago – I’m most proud of doing me the best way I know and I hope I’ll never take that for granted.
I think the main lesson I learned over time that I want to pass to others, is that we are here to play. Life is our story and we write it as we go.
Do you have any advice for beginner artist?
I think the advice that took my career to a whole different level was “don’t take yourself so serious”.
it’s all about making people happy!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live and work in Jaffa, Israel. I think it’s the one of the most special places in the world. Nowadays it has everything.
I would definitely start with the old city which is on a hill, you can see a panoramic view of the beach and the outline of Tel-Aviv. The streets In the old city are tiny and paved with little stones, you can see old mosaic everywhere and on evening time it’s full of fairy lights and the smell of the waves. Next stop would be the flea market and the southern beach which is right next to a couple of the greenest hills you’ve ever seen.
I love how the diversity of cultures here gave this place that special energy. there are so many different things to see here but the best last stop will be on my sunny roof top, drinking a cocktail and eat fresh fish you can buy directly from the fishermen.
