We had the good fortune of connecting with Irene U / Your Muther and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Irene, what are you inspired by?
I grew up in the 90’s house party & rave scene here in Southern California and its easy for me to draw inspiration from those life experiences. I would use my older sisters I.D. to get into places like Florentine Gardens, Arena, Circus or The Palace. Eventually I ditched clubs and started going to raves bc I didn’t need an I.D. The rave scene was exactly what I wanted and felt seen within it. 20 yrs later Im still here and inspired to do so much more.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others, I am very outspoken and direct. Female empowerment is key in the spaces & soundscapes I create, that in itself makes me stand out.. Dance floors are such a scared space to me and I love the energy exchange between dj’s & dancers.
Working as a hair stylist in Hollywood for 10+ years I was almost always the only queer woman in the room- I became so bored within that industry an in 2012 I started producing/promoting events & club nights more seriously. I started working doors at warehouse parties & popular club nights through out LA’s underground scene most notably Mustache Mondays. I began shifting my social media content to a POV of my life after dark which got a lot of attention . Soon after I co-founded my own party brands Lez Croix a bi-annual (Pride/Halloween) event & Homoccult which is currently 3rd Saturdays at The Eagle.
I think people have interesting takes on who Your Muther is. Its a take on me being the mom I always wanted. My mom is pretty conservative & religious, so we have different opinions on a lot of things.
Your Muther is a club mom, a rave mom, a stage mom. She has a lot to give but she aint PTA material.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
1- Shopping in Santee Alley with street dogs for lunch. 2-Sneaker shopping on La Brea
3-Stop at a dispensary in WeHo 😉
4-Deltas Tacos in Echo Park
5-Dinner at Perch
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I moved to Downtown Los Angeles in the early 00’s and quickly became involved with the nightlife in my neighborhood. That was when I started to go to Mustache Mondays and met Nacho Nava. I went every week and it always felt different with the line-ups Nacho curated. He was a good friend and mentor to me when I started producing my own events. The vision he had will continue to inspire the work that I do on so many levels. The first time I went to Mustache-I became a regular, I went back every week.
Over time Nacho had me help with promotions/marketing, run the door and dj. It meant a lot that he believed in me and understood the energy I wanted bring into his nights. He helped so many artists along the way, his impact was remarkable. Im truly grateful for the whole Mustache Mondays community he created.
