Meet J Bentayga: Recording Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with J Bentayga and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
There’s two types of people in this world, the people who watch/consume and the people who create/contribute. I never allowed myself to be influenced by anyone except a few select individuals, so I always had to create my own way of living, thinking, dressing, etc. Everyone I grew up with creates, everyone I keep around me creates, anybody who was meant for anything meaningful creates so that’s why I create. It wasn’t a choice, I’m just that type of person.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I consider myself a hip-hop recording artist/songwriter. I started making music back when SoundCloud first was just starting out. I was borrowing my friend’s guitar hero mic and figured out I could plug it into the computer and I was using some free music software to remix my favorite songs. Of course being so young, it never sounded that good but I was obsessed with getting better quality. Probably around sophomore year of college is when I started to like how my songs were sounding but to this day, there’s still a lot of room for improvement.
The only real challenges I’ve faced is that you literally cannot rely on anyone for anything. If anyone is reading this, just be prepared to go through your journey alone. Some good people might pop up in your life but more than likely you’re gonna meet a bunch of people you don’t need. This is your life project and you’re the only person you need. Don’t get too close to anyone and always be skeptical. I want everyone to know that great things take time and all great things have a story. At the end of the day, never be satisfied and only compete with yourself. This world is full of weirdos.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I haven’t met too many significant people in my actual life yet, but I listened to a lot of Drake growing up. I specifically chose to listen to him because he was clearly the most talented in his field and he achieved/built things similar to what I would like to achieve/build. I developed a lot of my mindset from his music and interviews and I think I chose the perfect person to be influenced by.
Some other people who influenced me in smaller ways was Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Travis Scott, Patrick Mahomes, and Cristiano Ronaldo. I could really break down how each one of these people contributes to who I am but I’ll save that for a later time haha
