Meet J.C.F.

We had the good fortune of connecting with J.C.F. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J.C.F., what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Growing up I was inspired by many artists, whether it was film or music as it was constantly something that intrigued me from a very young age. Both forms of entertainment showed me the power of art, and inspired me to write screenplays when I was around six years old. I began songwriting after listening to NWA’s album, Straight Outta Compton , which showed me how powerful their voices were by speaking about the realities of their environment. It gave me the courage and freedom to speak my mind no matter the cost, which translated to the stories I told through characters for my film projects. On the business side I was fascinated by Steve Job’s life work though his advancements in technology, and how his belief and resilience took him to the destination he dreamt for himself. I knew with these three endeavors I could have a positive impact on my community, aspire for change, and create endless projects within the world of entertainment.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My short film GLO I AM has had a successful run through the film festival circuit since last year. It had its premier screening at Indie Night Film Festival on July 8, 2023, it received an honorable mention at Voices Rising Film Festival, and also won Best Short Drama at the Global Film Festival Awards. I’m also currently in post production for my feature film, CHOICE$, that I’m looking forward to sharing. It was a very fun process filming with such an enthusiastic and supportive cast and crew, and I’m proud of everyone involved. Musically, I’m currently working on my album, dreaming 2 BELIEVE, I plan on releasing this year along with a collaborative mixtape as well. Through it all I’m in a place where I have gratitude for these experiences, and ready for the rest of the ride as I continue to work on my goals.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going to the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, as its one of my main favorite attractions in LA. I’m a big vinyl collector so anytime I’m there I go to Amoeba Music to shop for records and classic movies. The wax museum is a favorite place of mine to check out when I can, and I enjoy going to the movies at the TCL Chinese Theater. I’m a big Christopher Nolan fan so the last couple times I went to see Tenet and Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm. And of course I gotta get some kind of graphic tee at one of the souvenir shops too.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
At the beginning of the year I watched documentaries and interviews on the lives of Oscar Micheaux and Melvin Van Peebles. Learning about how they were able to turn their pain into purpose through their works, was such an important lesson for me to grasp as I grow not only as an artist but also as a man. Every time they had a door closed in their face by being denied of an opportunity, it didn’t stop them from moving forward. They fought for what they believed in and trusted their intuition during the process. They beat odds of not being conditioned by what society wanted them to do, and by pursuing their dreams with such fierceness and character. I will continue to always remember them and others who came before me by acknowledging the past while creating in the present for a better future.
