We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaden Hummel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaden, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m an action sports athlete and an entrepreneur so it might seem like I’m “not afraid of taking risks.” But the way I look at it, is that nothing is inherently riskier than another thing. You can get injured while playing a sport, but the likelihood isn’t that much greater than doing something perceived as safe. I think I’ve had more injuries just doing normal things – like walking down the stairs or bending down too fast. The same goes for business. People think they have job security, when really you can lose your job at any moment. People will save every penny, but you never know when an unexpected bill is going to come in the mail or the axle will fall out of your car. Safety is an illusion, and therefore a risk, if done well, is just a decision in the direction you want to go in your life. I say, go for it.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
There are a lot of people in the world who will teach you how to make money. And there are a lot of people in the world who will show you how to heal. It is rare to find someone who will prioritize both at the same time.
After getting a degree in Entrepreneurship and becoming the CEO of many successful businesses, I figured out how to make money. But I didn’t always know how to keep it, how to stay motivated, or how to actually feel fulfilled.
After my second business made me some money and left me unsatisfied, I decided to devote my entire life to my personal alignment. I decided to do the work I always wanted to do – to help people to trust themselves and live authentic lives, while following my own passions.
What I found was that I quickly was able to make a lot more money, feel happier – and all my clients were doing the same. Alignment is the answer to almost every question in life.
Was it easy? Entrepreneurship is not easy. If someone tells you it is, they’re either lying or they have blocked out some memories along the way.
But what I’ve found is that challenges aren’t necessarily a bad thing. Overcoming challenges in business has been the most rewarding part of my journey. And yes, I’ve made a lot of mistakes.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay a week in Los Angeles… this is always a hard task because there is SO much to do.
Highland Park is my favorite neighborhood, so we’d probably start our days with Collage coffee and then oscillate between Kitchen Mouse and Gloria’s for breakfast. How could you not?
Lunch – Amara’s kitchen or the taco stand on York & Fig. If they skateboard, we’ll go to G Park (that’s short for Garvanza Skatepark).
Before they even arrive, I’ve already made reservations at Bavel for dinner. It’s the BEST!
For fun, I always take people to the lookout at Occidental College, Bowling at Highland Park Bowl, and whatever skate events or concerts are happening that week. One time my mom visited, and we got to see one of my fave song writers, Carly King, play a small venue. Another time, my dad was visiting and we randomly stumbled upon the whole cast of friends in Hollywood. Someone was getting a star in the sidewalk. I love LA for that kind of thing. You always want to leave enough room in your schedule for random fun stuff to happen.
Oh and Erewhon. The beach. And Topanga.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to Jen Sincero, author or “You are a Badass at Making Money.” I listened to this audiobook on my way home during a college break and it was the first major breakthrough I had in personal development. Also shoutout to my first business coach, Krissy Leonard, my yoga teachers, John & Jane McConnell, and my Healing Touch teacher, Kathleen Scacciaferro. They were my OG mentors who shaped my journey from the beginning.
