We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaison and Auriana Spencer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaison and Auriana, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My husband and I chose this artistic career for different reasons. Personally I have been an artist for as far back as I can remember. I grew up illustrating my own stories, drawing cartoon characters, painting, and video editing. I’ve always wanted to make art for a living so running a business where I create logos, edit designs and screen print t-shirts is the ideal career for me. My husband has always been creative too and wanted to provide value to people by helping them put their ideas onto shirts. He is a self taught screen printer who continues to perfect his craft.
In May 2015 my husband and I had both recently finished college and were trying to find jobs. We lived in a small apartment with our daughter who was about three at the time. While we were applying to jobs we still needed money to pay our rent and bills so we tried thinking of ways to earn an income without the traditional 9-5. We originally started a clothing line with an old screen printing press that my dad had been keeping in his garage. We took the machine back up north to Clovis where we lived and started printing shirts for people not only in the city but all over California and the United States.
Over the past 6 years we’ve printed up 1000s of shirts for hundreds of different organizations. We’ve serviced multiple clothing lines, small and large businesses, universities, community events, family reunions, memorials, and so much more! This creative career path allows us to work from home and be able to provide for our two children. It has the potential to grow, run on its own and support us and all our future endeavors. It’s already provided so much for our family as well as taught us the importance of consistency and discipline. Although times can get rough and being your own boss can be a challenge, I can’t picture my lifestyle any other way.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets us apart is the teamwork and commitment my wife and I have for our business. We got where we are today because of the enthusiasm we both share. It isn’t just one of us whose putting their blood, sweat and tears into growing the business while the other just supports from the sidelines. Support from your spouse who’s not actively helping to build the business shouldn’t be underestimated, but imagine if two people shared the same vision. My wife and I share the same vision so we both have the same identity as owners who not only put in overtime whenever necessary, but nurture the business as well.
If I ever bring up ideas of other services our business can provide or if she thinks of ways to make things run in a more organized and efficient manner, we eagerly engage with one another by sharing our thoughts on those ideas. Sometimes we may disagree on things, but we overcome that challenge by simply comprising or just testing both ideas out. We’re learning that consistency and discipline is what keeps us going whether we’re feeling inspired or exhausted. And we want others to be inspired as well.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of our favorite places to go is Lake Perris especially during the summer. It’s a popular place to go to relax on the sand, bring your boat, swim or ride jet skis. Our kids really enjoy going since they love the water and get excited when they get to play in the sand. We usually bring sandwiches, fruit, water and snacks and our kids love bringing their toys to play with. We always remember to bring our tent so that we can have plenty of shade from the bright sun and sometimes we see other families bring camping tents or even bbq grills. We plan to go several times this summer.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of the first people that stands out in my mind is my Dad. He believed in us from the beginning and invested money into helping us afford a lot of the equipment we still use today. I’d also like to give a shout out to all of our clients, especially the ones who we’ve worked with for years and who continue to support our business and help spread the word about us.
