Meet Jalen Christopher | Director, Writer & Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jalen Christopher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jalen, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My work-life balance has definitely changed over time. In the beginning, it felt a lot more even, but as I got deeper into film, it naturally started to shift. Once I started seeing things actually come together from my work, it just made me want to go harder, so for a while, my life really did become my work.
I think there are certain phases where that’s necessary to have a real, “lock-in era”, where you’re just fully focused on leveling up. But at the same time, as a writer and director, I’ve realized I need to actually live life to create anything meaningful.
So now I see balance as something that’s always changing. It’s more about knowing when to go all in, and when to step back and experience life a bit more. I’m still figuring that out, but that awareness is what keeps me grounded and creative.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an independent filmmaker, screenwriter, and director, and the founder of Witness the Dream Productions. At the core of my work is the idea that film is a shared dream. It allows us to step outside of our reality and connect across differences. My goal is to create stories that bring people into new worlds while helping them better understand each other.
What sets me apart is how I approach storytelling. I blend creativity, history, and imagined futures, and I see film as more than entertainment. It can be an escape, but it can also bring communities together through meaningful stories.
My path into film wasn’t always clear. I explored other creative outlets before realizing film was what truly fulfilled me, and once I found it, I committed fully. It hasn’t been easy, but through hard work, perseverance, and belief in my vision, I’ve kept pushing forward.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of community. I focused on building with people around me who share the same drive and passion. Filmmaking takes a team, and having that support system makes the journey stronger and more meaningful.
I want people to know my work is rooted in connection. I aim to tell stories centered on love, individuality, compassion, and resilience, and to create work that reflects both who we are and who we can become.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To start things off, I’d take them straight to the coast. A beach day at Manhattan Beach is the perfect intro to LA, easy, scenic, and a smooth way to settle into the West Coast vibe.
From there, we head into the heart of the city, South LA, specifically Inglewood. We’re driving through the staples, passing by SoFi Stadium, Kia Forum, and tapping into some of the iconic local food spots that really define the culture.
If the timing lines up, catching a game is a must. Whether it’s the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers, or Los Angeles Kings, you’ve got to experience that LA sports energy at least once.
Next stop, Culver City. It’s got deep film history, a super walkable layout, and just an overall great vibe. It’s one of those places where you can really feel the creative pulse of the city.
For the night, we’re heading to West Hollywood. That’s where you catch the nightlife at its peak. If we’re lucky, the city’s hosting one of its many events or parties, and you really get to see LA come alive.
Overall, it’s a mix of everything. The beach, the culture, the food, the sports, the nightlife. You get a taste of the west side, the south side, and a little bit of everything in between, with a slightly more urban edge.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shoutout to Thomas Johnson, aka Tommy the Clown, and the Tommy the Clown Foundation. They gave me my first real paid production, where I got to help tell their story through a documentary that went on to Oscar-qualifying film festivals.
But beyond that, what they’ve been doing for nearly 30 years in underrepresented communities is incredible. Using dance as a way to keep kids away from gang and gun violence in Southern California, and really changing lives in the process.
Keep pushing the message and doing your thing, Tommy.
