We had the good fortune of connecting with James Anthony and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
For one I’d say, persistence. It can definitely be a challenge keeping your eyes on the light at the end of the tunnel. One of the hardest things I had to do on this artistic entrepreneurship journey, was to stay steadfast on the road to the “dream”, even during the darkest times. There were many times I contemplated stopping the chase and getting a “9 to 5” but I just couldn’t see myself working for someone while doing something I wasn’t passionate about. I knew that I wouldn’t be happy if I chose a job where I couldn’t exercise creative expression. So in short, being persistent is one trait that aided in my success. Being fearless in my creative expression has helped in my It has helped me step out of boxes I might have felt, I was being put in. Being consistent with creating has helped me build a body of work that I can use to bring…more work. I’d also have to say, being a people person helps as well. People enjoy artwork all the time, but that art can be even more enjoyable if you like the artist behind the work as well. I truly do enjoy authentically engaging with people. I love to be around other creatives often as I am inspired by their process as well.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I grew up chasing the dream of being an actor. But while chasing that dream, I entertained other creative outlets like drawing, painting, writing, dancing, and photography. I got to where I am professionally by staying steadfast on a dream to work for myself. Upon graduating college during a recession, I soon realized that working a 9 to 5 wasn’t really my thing. I deeply desired to have a career in the arts, and realized I wouldn’t truly be happy unless I did. I pursued editorial photography after taking an internship at VIBE magazine. I slowly started building a name for myself but it was still hard making a LIVING. I just kept focused on the saying, “Do what you love and the money will come.” LAWD it’s so true. If your persistent AND consistent, what you desire will come true. I got to where I am by betting on ME!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m an adrenaline and nature junky. I love activities that will either scare you or change your perspective on life. I love being out in nature and experiencing what the outdoors has to offer. Visiting scenic mountain top views and places where you can view and listen to the ocean is always a to-do for people when the visit. I love a good meal and truly appreciate quality cuisine being married to a chef. So I’d probably take them to this really good latin restaurant downtown LA called DAMA. SO good! I also enjoy silent parties a lot. Many people haven’t been to one before, so I always enjoy popping cherries.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my success to my tribe. My tribe consists of my family and even friends who have been in my corner since day one! Cheering me on from the sidelines, always pouring into me because they believed in me. Having support, real support can make all the difference when dream chasing. So, SHOUTOUT to THEM!
