Meet Jamey Mossengren | The Unicycling Unicorn (Professional Performer)

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamey Mossengren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamey, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
There is a song by Donavon Frankenreiter called “Life, Love and Laughter” and I love the message of it that life is all about love and laughter. In fact I like it so much that at the end of my show, I tell everyone this as well as telling them to be kind to one another. It’s my way of trying to make the world a better place, one show at a time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a professional unicyclist (probably never heard that before!) and I love what I do. My job is to try and make people happy and I love looking out and seeing people of all ages, races and religions, laughing together.
At first it wasn’t easy. I started street performing and the one thing nice about it, is that every show you learn something. Even a bad show, you learn what not to do. And it’s pretty much instant.
Practice make perfect and the more shows I did, the better I got. It took me over a year until I was good enough to quite all my other jobs and it has gotten better each year. Can’t believe it’s been 18 years now!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in a van (down by the river) and I love exploring new cities and places I go to. Cities are fun but I absolutely love nature, especially mountains.
I love taking friends on some cool hikes or to see some natural landmarks but if I had to take them someone in the city, I lean towards breweries. I love craft beer and have actually tried and rated almost 8,000 different unique beers on Untappd. I think it’s pretty neat that most allow dogs and have games to play.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my Grandma Shirley who bought a unicycle at a garage sale for us grandkids. If it wasn’t for her I would have never learned how to ride and would not be a professional unicyclist.
I also want to thank the old lady who came and gave me a $20 bill after my first street performing show. I had worked really hard for an hour, doing all my hard tricks and only made a couple bucks. I was sad that it wasn’t working and as I was packing up, telling myself I would never do this again, she came over and gave it to me.
She said she had been watching me for awhile and I was really good at what I was doing. She also said that I should keep doing what I loved. If it wasn’t for this random act of kindness, I would have never tried again and would not be the entertainer I am today. It’s crazy how one random person can change the rest of your life.
