We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always enjoyed looking at pictures and remembering that certain moment, time and place. I also lost my brother when I was a teenager, and I was then left with only pictures to look at. I wanted to make sure that everyone could have something to look back to remember that special day and/or that special person.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would consider myself a “Life Style” photographer. I enjoy catching the moment. Posing is fun, but that candid moment just feels different. I am proud of those moments that I have captured, and the reactions of my clients when they see them. From shooting a Baptism, capturing the moment when the baby was splashing the water with his hands during prayer, a 90th birthday, when grandma took a shot, to a backyard intimate wedding, when the groom danced his way down the isle. Seeing loved ones smile and come together makes capturing the moment that much more enjoyable.

Pictures are a conversation starter. You think back to what was so funny, start to relive that moment, and the next thing you know, you are in full laugh all over again.

I got to where I am today, simply by just not giving up. Being a photographer, especially in Los Angeles, isn’t an easy task. With cellphone technology continuing to grow, less people think of a hiring a “camera holding photographer.” Its not until they see the difference of the quality of work that photographers go through to get that picture perfect shot. The time we manually put in editing, when there are all these filters that people will just use from a camera phone picture.

It can also be a hard pill to swallow when a friend or family member has an event and doesn’t ask you to be the photographer. That was the one thing that took me a bit to not take so personal. I had to remember what my Daddy said about being realistic, everyone will not like my work. Some people only want to work with “well known” photographers, photographers who shoot celebrities’, etc. I just continue to promote my business and know, clients will come.

There’s a saying that I read: “Everyone is a photographer, until they have to put the camera in manual” that rings true. How many people can tell you what aperture, shutter speed, and ISO they need to use at any time? That is what makes photographers different.

I want the world to know, I may not be the most known photographer, BUT I take pride in my work, and always shoot to capture and provide the quality of work that I myself would want, and expect from a photographer.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are homebodies.

So the mornings, we are going to get our favorite Chai Tea.
Lunch, we would either put something on the grill, or go somewhere that has good salmon and veggies.
Dinner, cooking pasta at the house, go to Bossa Nova, my best friends favorite place.

Entertainment:

Live music is a must. Anywhere, Lewis Carter, Matthew Grant, or Sharde’ Collins is singing, I will be there.
Dancing is also fun. We’d take the Hip Hop with Karter class.
You can never go wrong with Manhattan Beach, to just chill and walk.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Daddy. My Daddy had tons of pictures of me, and I saw the love and joy in his eyes when he would look at them. I remember the stories he would tell me about the pictures if I didn’t remember the day.

Without my Daddy, I wouldn’t have had the equipment to even think about starting my own business. Not only did he provide my equipment, he was there to guide me throughout the process of filing the correct paperwork to register my company, Dupree Photography.

My Daddy was always my biggest supporter and cheerleader. Prior to my Daddy passing, I would call him at least twice a week and go over any new ideas I had or just share my thoughts. NO matter what, he made himself available and gave encouragement while always being realistic on what it would take to achieve it.
