We had the good fortune of connecting with Jane Free and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jane, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Over the last twelve years offering bodywork + healing arts, I have bobbed and woven my way to balance through staying focused on ‘service’. While I have been hands off the massage table for the last couple years, I always make sure I am working for free somewhere. Part of my massage practice has always included monthly volunteer bodywork or community events.

If I don’t have time to volunteer- I know my work balance is off. Since January 2020 I have been volunteering at KLBP Long Beach Public Radio 99.1 fm . Hosting and producing ‘Morning Intentions Radio’ ( M-F from 7-8 am) when Covid hit, I stepped into consulting for the fledgling station. I’ve been making this joke: “I got a promotion at my volunteer gig!” As I navigate the role of KLBP’s Operations Director, I make sure to set the boundary clearly. I work Monday- Thursday 10-3 pm. Otherwise email me !

Three day weekends literal FEED SOULS. And having two children help keep me out of the office … and focused on service.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
KLBP Long Beach Public Radio 99.1 fm is an organization I have been volunteering for for the last 16 months. Starting with our program “Morning Intentions Radio” airing monday-Friday 7-8 am weekly. We have built over 150 episodes!

We are grateful to have kept the listener supported KLBP radio station alive through Covid and have recently turned a new leaf with an influx of diverse management.

This station provides a voice for the people of Long Beach and an outlet for local musicians with monthly Homegrown Concert series. A series we just premiered session one on YouTube in April 2021: Homegrown Concert Live at the Scottish Rite.

With the station’s support we were able to produce, perform, edit and distribute a world class concert at a creepy old theatre that is nearly 100 years old!

In the last 6 months specifically, I have stepped into an Operations Director role at KLBP – where I help guide our general manager, station manager + leadership team. We are creating systems for the back end, systems for marketing and community outreach, even systems for our systems!! My experience directing Sacred Roots Holistic Healing center for the last 9 years has cultivated leadership skills that I am crossing into the public radio genre!

For the good of all people! Low power radio is an abolitionist movement that must be cared for, encouraged and shared with everyday earthlings – so we can all remember “we are part of the whole.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay… we practice “staycationing” in Long Beach regularly, it is full of love and life.

Typical family experience might include a trip to the aquarium, walking the harbor, maybe an early dinner at Lola’s Mexican Cuisine or ‘the attic’ – orrrrrr, maybe a day at heartwell park followed by some world class pho or ramen (silver lake ramen is our current ‘thing’)

Now – if it was >> DATE NIGHT << which I suggest all couples to invest in weekly. We might go see some burlesque at Harvelle’s, possibly go for an egg sandwich at the oldest bar in Long Beach: Joe’s Jost and I would probably try to convince my partner to hit ‘The Bamboo Club’ on my last leg of the night.

Much to do – but doing less is the real medicine – which usually includes a massage at Sacred Roots or yoga on the bluff .

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
