Meet Jane Gottlieb | Photography artist using photoshop

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jane Gottlieb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jane, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I wanted to be my own boss! But I began my career as an art director in advertising working for & learning from art directors. I worked for other people the first 6 years, in NYC & LA. I learned so much about being a professional, being responsible, being grown up. I slowly learned to trust my taste, gut & instinct. I had some wonderful jobs & learned so much.
However, I changed coasts & ad agencies enough times to always feel like I didn’t really know what I was doing at first in each new job….but that challenge was fun!
I asked questions, helped creative people I admired by befriending & assisting them.
After 6 years I left an terrific Art Director job & started my own ad agency with a few accounts, one of which was Rolls Royce of Beverly Hills. Everything I did for them I had never done before. I sold myself as an art director, designer & photographer with no one looking over my shoulder! I had photographed lots of cars before, but not with lighting & the precision you need to shoot a car ad. Not everything I did was brilliant, but I was always professional, on time, & responsible.
My willingness to take risks helped me to become a full time artist when I was 35. I had been trying to get my art career happening for 10 years with small achievements along the way. I finally got my first Museum show at the Laguna Art Museum & never looked back.
Now my dream of being a full time artist, appreciated & celebrated has come true. Tackling the Art World hasn’t been easy, but at least I was older & more experienced, & more professional than when I was younger. If someone doesn’t respond to my art I don’t really care now. I love what I create & that’s what’s important first & foremost!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Vivid colors are my passion, altered perspective & changing common points of view,
unique & intriguing: this is my art.
I welcome all to a contemporary Wonderland
with strong theatrical effects, classic compositions,
enhanced with my trademark saturated colors!!
An artist all my life, I have been creating
artworks with my lifetime collection of photographs
taken traveling all over the world, & the magic of
photoshop. My art has been exhibited in galleries &
museums across the US, Asia & Europe, featured in
numerous magazines, books, & displayed in all the main
international art expos. My art is collected in many
public, private collections & museum collections.
I am most proud of over 150 works of art I have in public buildings, mostly at UCLA & UCSB.
It’s an honor to have my art up for many many years to be enjoyed, appreciated by students.
I have hustled, & gone out selling myself at every art opening, posting every achievement & new artwork for decades. I enjoyed it. Now it comes to me & I don’t have to look so hard to some art action.
I am a dedicated artist that loves taking photos & enhancing, painting, & combining them with the magic of photoshop. I feel very lucky to have learned photography as a little girl with a Brownie Camera & in a dark room to today’s amazing technology.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is full of beautiful areas to share & explore, from Venice to Malibu to Brentwood & Santa Monica….all the way to Hollywood & downtown. Pasadena is a treasure with fabulous museums & architecture. Griffith Park Observatory is spectacular deco architecture & views.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Jayme Odgers was an amazing artist & teacher who passed away a few years ago. He was a constant inspiration & a brilliant photographer & artist. I saw his art at the printer we both used & asked to be introduced. I adored him.
