We had the good fortune of connecting with Janna Sheehan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janna, why did you pursue a creative career?
Words like job and career presume we are to make a one sided linear choice. Obviously one possesses free will and therefore does ultimately choose but, for me it was a mutual decision . It’s instinct for me to concoct, formulate and interpret nature so it was mutual. We are co-conspirators.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After formulating fragrances in what’s become a traditional world of fragrance (perfume made with synthetic ingredients) I was yearning for a direct connection with totally natural ingredients. Working with aroma chemicals was fascinating but ultimately there’s a limit to where one can go with them. It’s kind of like sugar. You can use it in a lot of different dishes and baked goods but it always tastes like the same thing: sugar.
With Ojai Wild, I am interpreting the California landscape through scent with the most sustainable method of creating fragrance. Every fragrance formulation begins with harvesting fresh herbs and botanicals from our Ojai farm then crushing, pressing and soaking the blooms to elicit the most authentic fresh and alive scent from the plant. After extracting this true essence I design an inspired fragrance with accompanying harmonious notes of distilled essential oils, resins and roots. It’s deeply rewarding to commune with nature this way but what separates us from every brand on the market is that we render almost all of our raw materials. We are totally vertically integrated – reliant on only accessory ingredients from other suppliers
We’re a little ahead of the curve with our colognes, Mainstream has not caught up with us but this is changing quickly. People are becoming more and more aware that putting chemicals on your skin is just as bad as ingesting GMO processed food. It’s joyful for me to know we’re upholding a standard of purity and people are responding with the same kind of joy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Coffee at the Coffee Connection in Meiners Oaks. This place is quality. It’s also a place where the locals go so the atmosphere is relaxed and easy. Hiking in Matilija Canyon
Hiking in the River Bottom
Grabbing a sunset at Meditation Mount
The bookstore at the Krotona Institute
Coctails at Azu
Wine at the Ojai Winery
Pizza outside at Boccallis
Mexican cuisine at Farmer and Cook
Dinner at Nocciola
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! I have two very smart, positive and creative women enthusiastically building Ojai Wild, right along side of me, Franca Zanovello and Carla Gervasio.
