We had the good fortune of connecting with Jarae Holieway and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jarae, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Honestly, I couldn’t imagine myself not working without an element of creativity involved in my career. I’ve been passionate about the arts since I was a kid, and think it’s really important to show the youth that you can have a creative career and be successful! I’ve been working since I was 16, and held an array of jobs over the last 11 years… I got bored so fast with work that wasn’t fulfilling nor creative. So this just felt so natural to me! By taking this route I knew it would involve a lot of patience, and persistence, it’s truly been a labor of love.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a multi-hyphenated creative, I’ve learned to never put myself in a box… or let anyone put me in a box. I am an artist first and foremost, but I am also a model, a stylist, a creative director, as well as a graphic designer. I’m proud of myself for not limiting myself, I love to experiment, because you will NEVER know unless you GO FOR IT! This year has really been a testimony to “going after all you want in life, and more!”. That gives me faith in where I’m being guided to go, as a black woman, and as an artist. PATIENCE, PASSION, AND PERSISTENCE are key, some days look brighter than others…. I’d be cheating myself to say my journey has been a walk in the park, but I also wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything! I like to keep the mindset of “all wins, no losses”, and “trial and error”, there is ALWAYS something to be gained at the end of the day! I’m still figuring a lot of things out, and that’s ok! A lot of it was putting my ego aside, and appreciating these moments of learning, and observing. The journey is waaaaay more fun when there’s an element of surprise.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA has so much to offer, and so much to see! I love that you can see the mountains from the beach, and be in the desert in a matter of a couple of hours. Honestly, I love being a tourist in my own city, and really love the energy of Venice Beach. It’s my favorite place to sit and chill, and catch some sun! There’s also an AMAZING taco truck, off of Avenue 26 in Cypress Park, you can’t beat $1 tacos, and a whole salsa bar, they even give you a fried potato on the side!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, and foremost I have to give BIG shoutouts to the real O.G! No cap, without God I wouldn’t be here doing what I do! Also gotta shoutout to my amazing friends and family, to my manager Kacie, and to everyone who has believed in me, collaborated with me, seen me, hired me, rejected me (rejection is your greatest protection ok!) and casted me over the course of my career!
