We had the good fortune of connecting with Jared Hales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jared, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My family and I are all pretty risk-adverse people. To this day I have had minimal injury, no broken bones, no sever accidents, no costly self-inflicted losses. That said, I have also been riding motorcycles (not exactly a risk-adverse activity) for nearly 20 years and have clocked many many miles on long distance trips off the bike as well as some gnarly off-road riding experiences like Barstow to Vegas rides or camping out in Utah to ride loops by day. I think risk should be calculated, understood and approached with a clear head. It is impossible to avoid all risk in life so choosing what risks one takes and why is critical to success in my opinion.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Hacea Coffee Source is focused on serving coffee roasters of all sizes. We do this in a way that is extremely transparent, collaborative and customized to fit each client’s needs. Like most circumstances, where we are today is the product of countless decisions made over years of time.
At every decision we face, we ask ourselves “who is this helping? Can this type of decision be sustained forever?” these questions focus our efforts to create something that can be a win throughout the entire supply chain. It is not easy, but through open dialogue we can communicate with each other to understand the needs and challenges. From here sustainable solutions can be found. By fostering tight relationships, we build a circle of trust that spans across continents and creates a highly resilient supply chain.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am spoiled in that my wife is also a trained baker/chef so I get to eat pretty well at home…
As far as coffee goes, my favorite go-to spots in the Fullerton area would be Van Dyke Coffee Roasters, Play Coffee, and Stereoscope Coffee.
I always make sure visitors check out the food at Tacos Los Cholos in Fullerton, Super Juicy Dumplings in Brea, Burritos la Palma in Santa Ana, or some fresh wood-fired pizza at Fuoco in Downtown Fullerton.
My favorite beers have usually been found at Bottle Logic, The Bruery or their off site location Terreux. Sala in Whittier and Semi Tropic in Costa Mesa have some killer wine selections to bring home.
Part of the reason I love California is that I can start the day at Laguna Beach and end the day in the mountains or camping in the deserts. I love it all.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My life partner Jamie is absolutely amazing. Not only does get it done for our business, she also takes care of me like I have never been cared for.
I also could not miss this opportunity to shout out Nathan Plaisted who is the mastermind behind our branding and design. Nathan took our idea and turned it into something completely distilled to the core elements. A brand, image, language that is cohesive, and concisely says what we are all about. Thank you, Nathan!
