We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmín Camacho and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmín, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
It makes me happy that people can see my artistic works and can perceive the meaning of them, feel a connection with them as much as I do.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art revolves around the beauty of women, both external and internal. My art presents a passionate and confident woman. My business started professionally in 2016. I have held several private and collective exhibitions with other artists. The biggest challenge I have encountered in this industry is the high cost of being able to exhibit art and that currently art is not valued as much as it should be. After several catastrophic events in my country, such as a powerful hurricane in 2017, several earthquakes and the Covid pandemic, I now feel that this is my year. I want to make my art known. That I can reach many people and they can feel the same as me through my paintings.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My island of Puerto Rico is beautiful. The first place I would take my best friend would be to a good brunch at a restaurant called “Ekelekua” in the town of Rio Grande. Then to our tropical forest “El Yunque” which is beautiful and has many endemic birds and wonderful flora. Visiting our beautiful beaches is also a good option. And at night a delicious dinner in so many restaurants that we have in Puerto Rico with a wide variety of cuisine.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am a self-taught artist. I learned to paint by looking around me and getting inspired by nature. But my daughter, who is also a self-taught artist, has inspired me to be a more confident woman and for this reason I want to dedicate this shoutout to her.
