We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Wesley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Although I am a singer/songwriter and music is my career, I’ve always been intentional about what I’m truly pursuing. I never say I’m pursuing music because what I’m really after is peace. A question I often ask myself is, “If I look back on my life, will I be proud of how I lived it?” Music and singing always terrified me, but I knew I didn’t want to look back with regret. I knew I would find peace knowing I never let fear run my life. So, I faced that fear. Interestingly, fear can sometimes act as a compass, as it did for me. Music is more than just a career; I believe it’s a calling and a vehicle to something much greater.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My music is a blend of acoustic, moody, and introspective sounds with a Latin twist, written mostly in Spanglish. What sets me apart is my willingness to be raw and vulnerable, exploring deep emotions in hopes of bringing healing to myself and those who listen. My journey hasn’t been easy—I had a deep fear of singing in front of people, but I eventually found the courage to face those fears. This led to me writing and performing anywhere I could while balancing a full-time job. About a year ago, I made the tough decision to quit my job and focus on being a full-time artist, and that leap of faith has been incredibly rewarding.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of patience, trust, and commitment. Success doesn’t come overnight, and it’s essential to stay committed even when the road is uncertain. By being true to myself and reconnecting with my roots through Spanglish covers and original songs, I’ve been able to build a strong community, which led to my latest EP, Nostalgia. I’m just getting started, and while I have big dreams, I’m also committed to enjoying every step of the journey. I hope my music creates a space where others feel they belong, just like it has for me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Monday night we would go to an outdoor theatre, those are the best in the summer. Tuesday we would order some delicious food to go and watch a show at the Hollywood Bowl, this is a must. Wednesday we would spend a day at the beach, go surfing with some friends, ride bikes, go shopping and enjoy a nice dinner and dessert. Thursday, we’re sleeping in, of course. We’ll find a nice local cafe and then head to a museum, my favorite being the Grammy Museum and end the night with some sushi! Friday we’re getting dressed up for a beautiful dinner with friends at an exclusive restaurant spending the night under the stars. Saturday we’re going to jazz night where they play a mix of latin and jazz music. We can set up a picnic outside or spend the night dancing. On Sunday, I’ll bring them to my improv show, then I’ll make a snack they can take with them on the plane. That would be a perfect week!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a few people who have been crucial in my journey. My brother, who first believed in me and encouraged me to move to LA, my friends who have always supported me, my parents with their endless love, and especially my husband, who has helped me see the artist and person I can become.
